    Russia Surrounded

This is one of the reasons that I think a lot rides on the Spring offensive. Zelensky et al know they have to demonstrate some strategic gains to stop the attrition of the war effort which would obvs get a lot worse under a Trump/Republican presidency.

Challenging a rouge state like Russia strengthens the West IMO. I would say strategically it seems like a success so far, in that it's not got too hot. I don't know what the long term effects will be but you could certainly argue liberal democracy will come out looking a lot stronger.

With respect dude, this is rubbish. "Not being defeated" is the lowest of bars. They've lost what? 200,000 men, God knows how many injured, the military is utterly weakened and exposed, Putin has had to go cap in hand to Xi, its going to have huge knock on effects on their arms trade etc etc...

It was always a massive favourite of mine. Been covered by a few people IIRC. Incognito IIRC? Reminds me a lot of this tune (though this is not quite as transcendent):

He was/is the sort of person a lot of people in the City believe they are, but aren't.

Yeah he was. Exceptional athlete as well. Quite gifted in the genetic lottery I think. Self-critique not being the strong point but I think I'd find that hard if I'd made literal millions in the City.

I think I knew raving was special, just the scale of the people involved, you could tell it was changing the culture. I think I only went to one illegal M25 rave, the Freedom to Party one but that was exciting. I remember being at South Mimms services with thousands of people and you could see...

Notes from a suburban raver - DannyL's list

I read something once that said the nature of mediation and subcultures means you always feel behind, like youî just missed out. I remember reading about Shoom and thinking that. To be present for something and aware its going be huge, important, might be very unusual I think.

i was still at a distance from it in outer London. it was a proper adventure, going "up West" especially to go out clubbing etc. This was quite a trend though apparently. Suburban soulies who started going to West End clubs. All this history gets subsumed before the acid house juggernaut.

Notes from a suburban raver - DannyL's list

It's more my trajectory? Rap before songs etc though the growth of "soulies' was kinda contemporaneous though it was more the music of mates' older brothers, that kinda thing, guys who were also borderline football hoolies. I don't think the UK soul scene as represented by Caister Weekenders and...

Notes from a suburban raver - DannyL's list

It's not the songwriting in terms of lyrics but his feeling in terms of melodic build and the use of a hooks and bassline that just stay with you for days.

Don't forget "Get Loose" either - it's basically the same tune as "Release Yourself" but with different lyrics. Perhaps it was an attempt to cash in on the success of whatever one came first. You might dig the Logg album and Universal Robot Band stuff, it's disco but Leroy Burgess is such a...

It is like the little retarded cousin of the rest of the "4 elements". I remember joking with a mate about Ready Rock C, Fresh Prince's beatbox, who'd obvs spent years perfecting his craft, he could do one that sounded like a Transformer, but then beatboxing went out of fashion, and he'd have to...

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/apr/18/west-prepares-for-putin-to-use-whatever-tools-hes-got-left-in-ukraine The former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said last month that Moscow was ready for the Ukrainians to hit back, warning that his country would use “absolutely any weapon” if...

That's the one I really remember from after school breaking sessions at my mate's house. We'd go round and practice (or he would, I was always pretty shit) on the 6ft sq of lino his mum had bought him, while listening to Westwood on LWR.
