    New Justin Timberlake song.

Gekoppel do you really think songs like "Summer Fling" are bad or are you just imagining that the three ballads at the end are more like six ballads? I think the album holds up remarkably well up until those three ballads and I even quite like them.

    what is funky house?

Some of my favourite soca-beat 2-step tracks: TJ Cases - One By One Cleptomaniacs - All I Do (Bump & Flex Dancehall Dub) Pay As U Go Kartel - Champagne Dance K2 Family - Bouncin' Flow Mis-Teeq - B With Me (Bump & Flex Dub) Although if this scene is into this Dennis Ferrer mix of "The Cure &...

    what is funky house?

The Fish Go Deep track is excellent! If this is what former grime-heads mean by funky house then I have a lot more hope that this development will be positive. The track reminds me a lot of Treading New Territories' "Easy Lovin' You", an unjustly overlooked 2-step classic.

    kode 9 and spaceape album

I really really like the Kode 9 album, esp. the first half. The only problem is the portentous dub glowerring of the prior singles, which I find more and more boring and enervating all the time! Kode9 is definitely at his best when on a more technicolour tip, and I'm very pleased that he appears...

    Silent Shout

I'm surprised by all the handwringing in this thread over <i>Silent Shout</i>'s alleged postmodernity, retroism, revivalism etc. Granted it's using synth riffs and stiff-sounding beats but I don't think that it is more indebted to the past than any other current music - including all of...

    The next new thing.....

"But it seems to me that the idea of progress seems to be tied up with things being more referentially ornate. Also it behoves me to point out that when i'm talking about (fist punches sky, lol) the revolution i'm definitely talking about change in the scenery of US/UK music musical-mediascape...

    The next new thing.....

I don't really like the kind of unrealistically hegemonised description of the "state of affairs" that allow people to make pronouncements like "the next new thing will be really simple and not over-produced, unlike all the over-produced music at the moment." It just seems to me to rely on...

    New Justin Timberlake song.

Yes I think so. <i>Justified</i> was propped up by its awesome singles really - this is more consistent, at least until you get to the chunk of dewy-eyed ballads at the end (which aren't necessarily bad but I haven't made up my mind about them yet). The title track is a fantastic opener - this...

The album is very good, quite amazingly so in parts.

    new Booka Shade album

By the way Dogger, the two Gui Boratto tracks to search for are "Arquipelago" and especially "Sozinho", which is marvellous.

    new Booka Shade album

I haven't heard that Romboy remix, but Romboy's "Sl Mirage" is one of my favourite tracks of the year - it's like DJ T's "Freemind" gone goth.

Trance/Progressive House -- breaking news, slander, lies, etc...

I think the crucial difference between minimal and proper prog is that the former has a more open-ended sonic palette, so that even though tracks may be similarly long and drawn-out, there's usually greater variation b/w tracks sonically. Whereas prog relies mostly on the difference in actual...

    new Booka Shade album

"Wouldn't that imply he should be less accessible to people engaging with this music for the first time?" Yes, but I'm not talking about novices Fandango, I'm talking about people who like dance music but don't really want to get into this scene because they assume that ultimately dance music...

    new Booka Shade album

Pier Bucci is from that Chilean clique too I think! And Dinky, although I think she's a bit younger. And one or two others It's quite remarkable, this South America --> Germany connection which has resulted in such percussodelic minimal techno. Another South American producer i'm really liking...

    new Booka Shade album

Did I? I actually made a post on one of the numerous ILM threads on Villalobos saying that I thought all of <i>Superlongevity 3</i> could pass for Villalobos tracks and I don't see it to be particularly helpful to single him out as an autuer when it's not like the rest of Perlon (plus Mobilee...

    New Justin Timberlake song.

He did make a "proper" desi track about two years ago which sank without a trace.

    New Justin Timberlake song.

Really? I always thought "What You Got" was one of the second-tier tracks on <i>Justified</i>. I somewhat predictably loved the four singles the most.

Favourite rock writers - and why?

"Except for Reynolds, I don't even consider the Village Voice's music coverage. And don't start me with Christgau, they guy personifies the Yiddish word potz , which for you non-speakers means: a 'cock'." Seriously though Buick, you complain about VV often enough, I'd be interested to see some...

Favourite rock writers - and why?

I always wonder which writers in particular you're referring to when you make that criticism Buick - "Village Voice writers" encompasses a lot of different kinds of writers - Chuck Eddy, Robert Christgau, Frank Kogan, Nick Sylvester, Simon Reynolds, Amy Phillips, Sterling Clover to name just a...
