A lot of people bag The Present Lover for its comparative lack of subtlety, but I would argue that the subtlety is simply shifted to a different level. Against Mark, I would argue that The Present Lover is a more absent record than Vocal City, its attractions more...

"the only thing worse than the Present Lover are the remixes of the title track. what a collection of stinkers (from quality remixers too). when she sings "getting creative with your chops" or some such atrocious piece of lyric it makes me want to puke." I assume you mean "Tessio", which...

I adore Nu Groove, but I don't really see what it has to do with Luomo, Matt. Unless you're just saying you find it difficult to be impressed by house generally these days. As for The Present Lover, I think a small part of me died when so many people I respect came out and hated on that...

    question for ukg experts

Mis-Teeq - Why (Matt Jam Lamont & DJ Face Mix) - pop classic! Also there's a great version of Frances James & DJ Face's "Girls Play Too" but I can't remember which - also that's from 2001 so maybe outside your sphere of interest dominic.

The two tracks I highlighted, I did so because of their basslines. "Synkro" especially, it's so delectably heavy, like continental shelves engaging in frottage...

    Jackson's Remixes

If you like the "Run Into Flowers" remix specifically then I'd recommend checking out James Holden more than other Jackson - see esp. Holden & Thompson's "Come To Me".

This revisionism will not stand!!! Simon keep listening, it's an utterly amazing record but you have to let it get inside of you. Listen to "Synkro" and "She-Center" as loud as you possibly can.

    Jackson's Remixes

The remix of Freeform Five's "Break Me" is on their Misch Masch mix (which is awesome). It's quite straightforward electro-house, sorta Einmusik-ish. It's good, but beaten by Richard X on the Mishc Masch mix, who turns in an unbelievable version of FF's "No More Conversations".

herbert - what do you reckon?

The emerging consensus here is correct - albums up to Bodily Functions plus Ruby Blue = greatness - but I can't be the only one here who listens to Secondhand Sounds much much much more than anything else.

"Now that's what I call Grime" track listing suggestions

A collection of not-too-old stuff that would make a good commercial comp: Danny Weed - Shank Riddim JME - Serious Katie Pearl ft. Jendor - Mr. DJ Ruff Sqwad - Future Statik - Charge (Remix) Bruza - Get Me Wiley - They Just Can't Get Along With Wiley Breeze - Marchin' On Skepta - Single Low Deep...

    Too much music?

"Wow, I bet you're the sort of person who turns off TV after they've finished watching the programme they sat down to watch too!" Mostly! But my point wasn't that i can withstand TV's evil influence and isn't that great; rather, that these different tendencies are different socio-technological...

    Too much music?

I don't disagree with yr points about downloading Mark, but I think it just renders more visible what was already an underlying factor in music appreciation. Simon's article on his blog I think demonstrates how the same impulses are created and satisfied in an analogue environment: buying and...

    Reccomend me some techno/house

Yeah "Mandarine Girl" is massive, sorta Get Physical doing Border Community. "Body Language" (the Booka/M.A.N.D.Y. collab-o) is great too yeah, I really like the supa-expansive Afrilounge remix.

    Too much music?

No it's not intidimidation... i think fear of being misconstrued maybe. Mark and Matt's threads in particular always feel like they've been created for posterity's sake, like they'll be unearthed in ten years time and reviewed by a panel.

    Too much music?

Ha ha I think it's a sign of how guarded I feel posting in a lot of these threads that I have to over-contextualise and -qualify everything. On ILX i'm always posting one-liners...

    Too much music?

I think Stelfox's idea of "focused dilettentism" is a very relevant one - esp. to an arena like this in which hardly anyone is really an actual purist (the performative contradiction in Simon R's position is that for all his championing of purism he remains ridiculously broad in his range of...

GRIME- breaking news, gossip, slander, lies etc

Not sure if they'd all be considered "experimental" but the following are big mindfuck grooves for me: Jammer/Wiley/Bigga Man - Pick & Mix Bigga Man - Scuff Ya Pumas Jammer - Vice Versa (instrumental 8-bar flipside to Kano's "Boys Luv Girls"); Mystic Ruff Sqwad - Anna (but the entire Ruff Sqwad...

    Reccomend me some techno/house

What you want is the new Dominik Eulberg double mix-cd, Kreucht & Fleucht, which is the closest thing to a definitive compendium of the post-Villalobos brand of woozy, psychedelic minimal dancefloor techno (Eulberg himself, Jonson, Trentemoller, James Holden, Alex Smoke, Luciano...
