    The definition of Science Fiction

I gotta rewatch Demon Seed then, bc I don't remember 1995 being mentioned in the actual movie. If it got mentioned, it's actually not against my statement from above.

    The definition of Science Fiction

I think it's a bit the other way round, if there is no distinctively different timeframe being mentioned, it's always assumed the setting of a story - also with "sci if"-background - is the present. Another example would be Demon Seed or The Forbin Project.

    The definition of Science Fiction

Jurassic Park was set in 1993 pretty much. The year it got released, bc it played with the gadgets of the currents, like CD-Roms presented as the hottest shit of the dawning "information age"

    The definition of Science Fiction

As stated above, lot's of Sci Fi actually isn't set in the future. Another example would be Jurassic Park.

    The definition of Science Fiction

A decent "working definition" which would include most of the dystopian movies/stories that come to mind. Such as one of my all time favs ZARDOZ

    The definition of Science Fiction

The technology/science-heavy aspect doesn't have to be projected into the future necessarily. Take many x-file episodes or the 2004 Manchurian candidate. Scenarios of present times, but with (just slightly) interpolated technology.

    The definition of Science Fiction

Rollerball? Children of Men? to me, Sci fi needs to include (somewhat heavy) influential role of (envisioned) "science" in the movies. The above mentioned don't rellay have that, nevertheless setin the future. Rollerball actually 2018

    Twitter?

I have to sadly admit out of morbid curiosity I occasionally check assorted celebrities' tweets - just to regret that move soon :crylarf: As to the latter part of your post, I think tweeting is considered the main form of existance in some odd way. How influential people are via Twitter? Hard...

    Twitter?

I only use twitter to check occ on a few musicians. After all, why invest time and emotional attachment in something which is basically set up to promote the tweeter and sell the follower to online advertisers. To me how a big number of users uses twitter seems very misguided - as if they record...

Nationalism, immigration and racism in the EU

It's of course encouraging - after Brexit and Trump's victory, it looked as if the populists' international was an unstoppable steamroller. As an Austrian I can verify everybody thought Hofer would win the presedential race here - but he didn't and he was actually losing gound. Same with...

More from my fav right wing conspiracy nutter twitter feed: Why are libs demanding evidence that Obama spied on Trump? Unnamed sources & baseless claims were enough to satisfy their Russia hysteria. 658 replies 9,902 retweets 17,456 likes Yet more, nothing but negative responses from...

    Trump

Of course - for them - that's exactly a core issue all over the western world right now - the "fake news" debate. Trumpists or Brexiters (who in many ways share the same ideas) by now won't believe ANYTHING by the "main stream media", but would believe ANYTHNG theysee on "infowars" etc. Many of...

Lie = willingly say untrue things. I rather have the impression a lot of people absolutley believe what they say - no matter if it's factual or not. for them it IS factual (just look at the conspiracy theories going wild these days). - which further complicates things.

    Breitbart

Hu? These are just headlines - the contents of the articles (which I haven't read) may or may not be accurate. So in Austria there have been repeated cases of people joining the Islamic state. These made the headlines. Is it "islamophobic" that this makes the headlines? Hardly. And yeah, not...
