it goes right to heart of the making music, the intention-set that one has when deciding to create. Why include that music part, what is the purpose of it. was the decision to include it an open hearted one based on honestly engaging with what the tune itself is asking, or was it a cerebral one...

sorry that was a rant & a downer. that new bnjmn ep is chill, i like it a lot. kinda synthwavey 2step.

i think slothrop nailed it, to me this is one of the strongest song/rolling fem/masc dark/light meeting point that ive experienced, since going to jungle nights in 95ish. The point about interesting elements & narrative over attention to actual execution is, to my mind, the defining malaise of...

when uk nuum artists attempt "a jazz thing", they tend to produce a stilted british-lad dud of it. Idk why, but it most often sounds like an error. It just doesn't become them somehow. Much in the same way americans tend to be crap at reggae, we're mostly shit at jazz. one of Falty DL's...

lol. turning your past band into your production surname is, certainly, unadvisable.

Idk, i think the critique you've made is perhaps transporting a dislike of an audience's reaction to an artist onto the artist themselves. You might make a case for it being unfair for him to have extra press attention, but the unfairness aspect is less compelling when many core djs and fans are...

    name the sound!

do you have a synth to hand? turn on one pulse oscillator, set to very wide. maybe turn on white noise oscillator. hold down some keys. you'd probably call it a pad. or a keyboard sound, its somewhere inbetween.

question of how dark, if u mean like a more abstracted & abrasive version of funky, then yeh im surprised it hasn't happened yet. Funky is definitely reiterating itself at this point, they seem to have said what they wanted to say. Good time for someone to taint it, destabilize it.

DVA's been doing this for a while no? Or was that just a phase. tbh i dont really pay much attention to funky, just because of this samey smoothness.

he rides the mpc levels overloud, internal clipping afaik. a lot of ppl are coming to like that distortion in rap recently, they say it sounds street/gheto etc.

Mov3ment is often very similar. Those 'Dipset Trance Party' (lol) mixtapes have a bunch of araabmuzik-alikes. Idk the relationship btw araabmuzik and the other producers tho. It could be that one of the lesser known producers influenced the style which he became famous for. I've read...

Awesome. perhaps a little early to declare the death of the uk-nuum imo. there are future lineages to come and die also. i think some nuumists read Energy Flash like socialists read Das Kapital. they won't enjoy post nuum music, not ever. Its somewhat similar to that true-school golden-age hip...

    Death Grips

well the back-to-the-goths thing illustrates the marginalization at work more than the processes driving it. In late 90s clubland, paranoid-futurology was a friday night main room thing, ravers in ben sherman packing rooms to hear No-U-Turn, Jeff Mills playing music that described an end of days...

great i just lost my entire post. it wasnt a pejorative judgment bandshell This kind of paranoid-apocalyptic-futurist hiphop was kind of a thing in the late 90s. artists like Dälek, Bigg Jus, Nephlim Modulation Systems (+ Orko's solo work), Techno Animal (kevin martin plus friends), Anti Pop...
