    re: ascetic

I do find it kindof amusing how much he's made out to be some kind of cryptic warrior monk. seems like just the kind of romantic BS that that journalists love.

[McChrystal] eats just one meal a day, usually in the evening, to avoid sluggishness...

Per usual, I'm just going off what Joshua Faust says.

yeah I mean I'm sure I'm just reading the same stuff you are.

all I mean is - rather wait & see what he does.

at least initially it's more interesting w/r/t Obama I reckon.

Well, sure. I do think that Afghanistan is basically not winnable now, although I would be very happy to be proved wrong.

I think that depends entirely on what one means by "winnable". As in, what would "winning" be? I don't really know, tho I also suspect that many policymakers don't really know either.

either way I agree that unless he's Superman I doubt a change of command will, by itself, turn anything around.

this is a thread about Pakistan and Afghanistan, right?

    so

Allegations of abuse and neglect at a US detention facility in Afghanistan have been uncovered by the BBC

(also, and i know this is somewhat OT, but Joshua Foust takes a deserved boot to Ahmed Rashid at the start of this worthy post about Uzbek terror.)

several days belatedly via Abu M

profile of Tehrik-e-Taliban don Baitullah Mehsud

    &

    2 Marines killed Monday

apropos of the big push the USMC is heading up in the Helmand Valley. actually getting a fair bit of coverage over here, even w/MJ & unfaithful governors & the Sotomayor confirmation hearings (f**king 7 different Republican senators have grilled her on the "wise Latina women" line so far...these goddamn dog & pony shows...)

Here too. There's even been some debate about procurement issues and the lack of funding for British troops in Afghanistan. Mad.

    Also, KOW thread on Helmand.
