let's be optimistic. i can go back to watching forest in less than 2 months.

also, holland are playing today, and people keep touting denmark (for ludicrous reasons in my opinion, i think they're a shocking side and no way will they get out the group). tomorrow we have slovakia vs paraguay.

zonal marking pretty much spot on

- the lack of technique was shocking. Perhaps there are moves to address the skills gap, as England U17s were conspicuously full of tricks, dribbles and passing sequences in the recent Euros (which they won). I prescribe futsal, football-tennis and a move away from the worship of pure athletic ability.

- Gerrard and Lampard are not players who can do keep-ball. They only function properly when a team is in 'attack mode' - witness Liverpool's collapse after Alonso's departure. They are also uncreative - Joe Cole is the best we can muster in that regard but even he is not the man he used to be.

- the general lack of enthusiasm and slow-wittedness might in part be a consequence of life behind the Capello curtain being so dull: no wine, women and song to keep the mind active and break cycles of negative thinking or familiarity/contempt dynamics within the camp.

disappointed capello only made what were basically like-for -like substitutions

yep. drove me spare.

i gather Capello has said he'll change things for the next game. fingers crossed.

he is starting to drift into waters marked 'indefensibly rigid', that's for sure.

agree w M_B about 'attack mode' for Gerrard (funny you should mention Xabi A, as if the Spanish have any sense he won't start their next match).

incidentally a good mate of mine, United fan and not an England fan (like a lot of United fans tbf), says he wouldn't be surprised if Rooney had an op after the WC, 'he's not really looked right since getting injured against Bayern'.

To step back slightly from the England situation, it does seem to be increasingly a lietmotif of international tournaments that teams of global megastars who turn up expecting to win games by their very presence are running into problems against much smaller teams who've got far less going on in terms of raw talent, but have a solid tactician in the dugout and play with discipline and drive and less sense of expectation hanging over them.

Or is that oversimplifying a bit?

On the plus side, everyone else is now getting a bit of an insight into what it's like being a Newcastle supporter...

Also, the smaller teams don't have so many players who have played Champions League or other European cups and so they tend to be relatively well rested.

nice work england, really goes to show that a team can totally transform its fortunes in the space of a few days. last week england were dire, couldn't string even a few passes together, today they looked like world beaters.... wait... wrong thread...

Marina Hyde in the Grauniad pointed out today that the England shirt is like the opposite of Superman's shirt, it turns people with amazing ability into mild-mannered normal guys

Ghana v Australia is literally end-to-end stuff

Ghana looked alright but in the final third they were appalling. They just seemed to take wild potshots from outside the box, despite having free players on the wings. Not nearly enough players in the box for crossing opportunities either.

Ghana were shit. One man up for most of the game against a bunch of second division players. Chances are they've blown it now - they'll lose to Germany, Serbia will beat Aus.

Cameroon v Denmark is proper end-to-end brilliant bad football.
