This is shaping up to be quite the match - two pretty spectacular goals (although maybe the Dutch goalie should have gotten to that second one).

Tyldesley thinks a Dutch victory will be especially popular in S. Africa, where many still speak Afrikaans. I'd like to see the polling evidence on that one.

Really not convinced by this assumption that Spain are pattering around aimlessly while masterful Germans just await their moment.

(I hope I won't regret this post)

Just watched the first half and you'd have to be a pretty big German fanboy to draw that conclusion. Spain have been dominating in possession, while Germany, even when they have had a good go offensively, haven't finished it up with much.

One must also consider the prophecy of Paul the Octopus.

spain are unbeatable. ironic that they did actually lose at one stage. but simply unbeatable. you chase them around for 75 minutes, then they score, then you try to muster up an attack and they just pass it around you. that sequence of corners where they didn't just play it in the corner but just passed triangles around the german defence was embarrassing.

lawrenson was just an embarrassment. "oh it's all even here" and "germany just waiting to score" and "germany look the more likely to score"... then up pops the stat shots on goal: spain 11 germany 2.

germany have been excellent but spain are a different class. the best and strongest international side i have ever seen. they could beat every world cup winner in at least the last 20 years.

that was wishful of you.

Pedro deserves a serious spanking. Glad to see Del Bosque sub him off.
Best game of the tournament for Iniesta, i thought.
The whole backline played great today. Funny to see all four of them in the box on the goal... makes perfect sense, since probably no one else on that team could reasonably be expected to be an air threat against a bigger German team.
Pique is a total monster. So so fundamentally solid and creative. He's definitely been my defensive mancrush of the tournament (nice to have someone young step in to supplant and support the aging Zambrotta, Cannavarros, Puyols, etc.).

edit:
really i think what makes this team so tough is precisely how well they defend in the offensive portion of the pitch. also, what they do (which only two or three other teams consistently do) is remain possession minded, even when they are making defensive clearances. considering how tense the situation was, you would have expected Germany to pelt them for the last five or so, but everyone on that team is bred to look for a short pass in all situations, and they cooly played out of trouble almost every time.

Spain were amazing. Totally outclassed the Germans.

Pedro had me tearing my hair out. Couldn't believe he didn't make that pass.

How selfish can you get? Torres' wee tantrum jump was amusing but totally justified, he must be absolutely choking for a goal by this point.
