Definitely the coolest thing I've seen for a few days.

Wow, they're amazing. Just chatting with a Serbian friend however, and asked for her opinion on them:

"I know most of them. Due to the book pics in primary school. They are mostly monuments to fallen soldiers and civilians during the Second World War.
However I think most of it is typically commy and very ugly!"

Intriguing monuments - some are astounding, I reckon, and it surprises me to see people calling them ugly.

I thin they're astounding too, but put it in her context - they're monuments to dead people, and with what occurred in the 1990s that's not something people who grew up their whole childhood with that find very beautiful!

But yeah, out of context, def amazing.

Yeah, reminds me of the statue park just outside Budapest where they put all the old Soviet monuments after Communism collapsed. To me it was an amazing and weird place but when I spoke to the locals they would say things like "I saw them when they were in town, why would I want to look at them now?".

Let's Talk About Ceps
These are amazing. The top one reminds me of the Tellytubbies' house, sort of. How did you come across these, Rich?

The one with the hole is a bit like Men-an-Tol:

cannot stop looking at the interior shot of the UFO / monument to socialism that sufi posted.

I'm currently living here, really want to find some film so I can take pictures of some of the buildings here, before they get knocked down and replaced with some plastic monstrosity.

a recent piece in the Guardian about a book of Soviet architecture: http://goo.gl/K2joR

(sorry, only just saw you post, Idle)

Combination of neglect by the state and rampant real estate development (aka money laundering) which requires new land, I'd guess. There isn't really much in the way of conservation in the former USSR.

btw, a band called Unknown Mortal Orchestra used one of the Yugoslav WWII memorials in the first post for their album:
