i went to paris for a day last february.... i went on my own.... i took a early morning train from london.... i got into gare du nord station around 9am.... there werent any signs in english.... i walk outside.... a sea of people, i am immediately accosted by people talking to me in french, they quickly realize i cannot speak the language and move on to the next person.... the city was so congested, my hotel was right in the thick of it all.... wandered around the city by where napolean's tomb was (he was real guy?) since my hotel wasnt ready yet and i really had to use the restroom.... i walked into a resturant and asked if there was a bathroom, he said no, this is a resturant... what a dickhead.... i made my way back to the hotel which was ready, i drop my stuff and wander to the eiffel tower.... as i get around there, i see street gamblers, these guys hiding a ball under cups and people put money on which cup it willl be under, i watch close, but distanced, the guy points to me and asks which cup and 100 dollars, i say i dont have it and he says its ok.... i smile..... i keep watching, later a guy comes over and says he'll take me to an atm.... i walk away....i got to the eiffel tower, im up close, i take a picture.... ok thats it i guess and make my way to the louve.... massive museum, i get there with 2 hours to close and still a sea of people waiting to get in.... i see hardly enough, but still amazed... there are signs around pointing directions to the mona lisa, i walk along and the room is so full, such a tiny painting.....i leave, i get back to the hotel to eat and its dark out.... im pretty disgruntled over this city.... congested and not so elegant in the cold... i go to this great 200 step lead up to church... its beautiful... amazing view of the city, and whole other part of town, so quiet.... i wish i had been around here all day.... it was a peaceful cap off to a disapointing day..... i watched Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris last night, it was quite affecting, i didn't expect it to be that way given my ambivalent feelings to the city.... but the romanticism displayed in creating a character out of the city makes me want to visit and spend more time there
