This is a quick hip hop "mix" or rather selection of MP3s - that I've just done for a download swap on VG+. January is mixswap month which is why I've been banging 'em out. Forgive the spamwich. It's a by no means definitive stumble through some tunes from last year and a bit before. To those of you who are regularly checking for new rap, most of these will be familiar but to the interested bystander who doesn't know where to start, it might useful. All of the tunes are straight up bangers anyway, all personal favourites. I hope some of y'all enjoy anyway.

This is great - some real earworm beats here. I didn't think I liked Gunplay or Gucci particularly, but now I know better... :)

Gunplay is fucking sick as I'm sure Luka will testify. And Gucci is a legend, I hope he gets out from under his latest set of legal woes. Apparently the first person he played "Hell Yes" to was Young Thug!

Bible on the Dash is so classic, tho I admit I did need the help of rapgenius on a few occasions to work out what the hell he was saying... Off to check out some more!

Kevin Gates is killer too, but that's one i'd worked out before...

How do you do a mix? I have thought about doing a rap mix for a while but I dunno what software to use.

When I'm ripping from vinyl, I use Audacity to record the tracks, put them into an iTunes playlist and then record as one MP3 via Audio Hijack. Audio Hijack is Mac only and you have to pay for it, but it's a really great program - you can rip any audio that passes through your computer. The reason the bass is a bit distorted on this one is that I turned up the gain too high while fucking around with Audio Hijack. Obviously none of this is from vinyl, I just lined up the MP3s in a iTunes playlist.

You can use Audacity to do things like trim tracks and level the sound as well, which I do in my from vinyl mixes but I didn't do here - I did it in a bit of a rush while doing other stuff. If I was doing it properly, I would have put the MP3s into Audacity and edited them there for length and levels, and exported as a WAV so as not to lose quality.

Reaper is meant to be v good for computer-based mixing.

Do a mix dude! I'd love to hear. I'm entertaining the idea of doing a Gucci 'Best of" next.

This is nice, Danny, thanks. I got a comp of Gucci stuff if you wannit - mainly off Chicken Talk 2, Trap Back, I'm Up cos they were the ones that turned me on, shout if you wannit. I fully realise that each man's Gucci is...each man's Gucci.

Danny maybe we could collaborate on a Gucci mix for my blog?

Or just a compilation competition thing.

I'd be very up for doing a "Best of " Gucci - could be fun. Gonna have to dig deep and download a bunch of the old tapes 'cos I don't know them so well. I found a David Drake top 50 which'd make an excellent starting point.
