Apart from the time/place-specific distinction that posits that left wing governments should be all open borders, the AfD seem reasonably left wing, being otherwise quite socially 'progressive', wanting to keep the welfare state etc.

The left wing as a whole is more likely to survive past the next decade if immigration is slowed and made selective, as I see the the following events taking place in this order:

- First, the large proportion of young muslims will become able to vote and be well organised enough to make or break a party's election chances.
- A Conservative party will put forward policies centred on the overlap between trad Christian and Muslim practices, meaning the beginning of the end for progressive advances made since 1960.
- Less than 10 years after this the Muslim voting bloc will be strong enough to do away with the remaining un-Islamic practices, meaning the beginning of the end for alternative religious practice.
