Also, if the US wants to insulate itself from Russian/Chinese disinformation, propaganda and hacking, it seems to the only way would be to set up a national-level firewall that blocks any traffic containing certain words, phrases or images, and to block foreign search engines, social media sites and mobile apps. In other words, to give up any pretence on being a 'free' country become just as restrictive as Russia and China.
this is quite interesting isnt it. what youre pointing out is that for a long time the west was able to pretend that information is neutral and that a free country has nothing to fear from information, and used information to try and weaken foreign governments, radio broadcasts and so on.

the west doesn't care if you espouse communism cos it knows no one wants to live under communism, not even self professed communists. but russia (adam curtis said it was russia so it must have been them) found a way to use information against the west, not by espousing a competing ideology, but by identifying and exaceberating the tensions in hetrodox populations, and by amplifying illiberalism, which is all the things you're not really supposed to say, and can often be punished for saying, and which have, as a result, a kind of seductive force
like white people are being replaced in their own homelands, like black people have a propensity for violence, like gays are disgusting etc etc etc

and that has made the notion of a western firewall at least conceiveable

Well it's already there, tbh.

They banned tiktok till they succumbed to the ability to freeze out #freepalestine (etc) under the pretence of Chinese interference. Ofc once redbook shot up the app store there's no way they could have that

Twitter will now force feed the new Republican/Reform party line down your throat on "For You" unless you're willing to spend about forty minutes switching your "default" interests off. It had switched on Andrew Tate for me! The little no chin cunt

HMG is quite clearly posting a Mossad asset in the guise of Ian Carroll/WallstreetApes earlier in the thread ffs

And quite apparent that the Trump mechanism has dragged the Zuck and all them boys into the mix now so Meta would likely go the same way now

I thought it was most apparent after the Southport stabbings that the system was in full control, as I was fucking bombarded with every inflammatory riot race-bait post in the world for at least 48 hours. but then my profile is music/football/mma/construction enquirer. So in theory I am a good algorithmic fit?

Unless you're strong willed then these fucking things will swallow you up. We used to slag off wechat and those boys but it just turned out it was the model

forgot to mention how often in the past few years I've had mail/packages show up mangled/damaged, or never not show up at all, my/our mail getting delivered to the wrong address, getting other people's mail (sometimes for people that don't even live on the same street!), etc...

This used to almost never happen.

I was thinking about the (temporary) banning of TT as the closest I've seen a Western government behaving in the way I've described. But then, Trump and the GOP are still highly antagonistic towards China, and have notably taken no action against Facebook, which has been the main channel for Russian psy-ops business for years, since it obviously directly benefits them.

Wonder how long before their current dominance becomes the lame, mainstream thing and progressive positions become subversive again.

i think you almost need a whole generation of 'progressives' to die off or disappear or change before this can happen. it's properly fucked. in america at least, so far as i can tell.

from the geezer who runs War Child, which is a pretty good summary i think of how things look close to the action (i.e. outside of the US mediadrome):

I left Lebanon this morning with serious doubts about whether some of the people I met here will still be alive in six months. In shutting off aid for 90 days, and issuing vague waivers about protecting lifesaving work, the US administration betrays a deep lack of understanding of the aid system and the acute vulnerability of the people who rely on it. People will die in large numbers. Here is why.

A 90 day suspension means that, even if a particular project is eventually deemed lifesaving, and can therefore continue, there is a 90 day interruption of cash flowing to the organisation delivering it. NGOs and their local partners do not have sufficient cash reserves to cover this gap from their own resources. They are forced to cut their staff immediately and stop their work. Food is not delivered. People starve.

Even organisations who can bridge the cashflow gap have no certainty that the money tap will eventually come back on. Despite the waiver, some NGOs in Syria are receiving stop notices for food security and protection work, whilst others are not. The chaos and unpredictability means many agencies are forced to stop simply because they don't know the status of their project.

The system unravels further when NGOs realise that the UN agencies they rely on for alternative funding are themselves on a 90 day suspension from US government funding. And the problems go deeper. NGOs might still be receiving funding from European donors and others, but without the US funding, their infrastructure costs are no longer affordable. They are forced to abandon offices, warehouses, trucking contracts as rapidly as they can. Downsizing on a scale as drastic as now required cannot be achieved over a weekend. The costs that can't be avoided will represent a huge drain on NGO reserves, and will force some into financial collapse.

Few would argue that a government system as big as the US aid programme would not benefit from a rigorous review. However, I am certain that nothing in the US aid budget would come close to the level of incompetence displayed in this careless and instant aid 'suspension'. If this administration no longer wants to contribute to global protection funds that is their decision to make. They nevertheless have a responsibility to manage their exit with some regard for the lives of millions of people whom the USA has previously promised to assist.

one of the broken things is that in the media / commentary you never hear from them. you just hear from people speaking on their behalf. the west africans have been very visible if you use your eyes but pretty invisible online
Think logically: the mainly left-leaning media clearly has the wherewithal to interview them, but these interviews must not get released because stories of paying a fortune to get to NY only to end up working for a gang master who siphons off 80% of their wage in return of keeping shtum doesn't do much for the liberal audiences' warm and fuzzies about illegal immigrants.

President Trump has just revoked the security clearances of Secretary of State Antony Blinken, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg

I wonder why
