this is quite interesting isnt it. what youre pointing out is that for a long time the west was able to pretend that information is neutral and that a free country has nothing to fear from information, and used information to try and weaken foreign governments, radio broadcasts and so on.Also, if the US wants to insulate itself from Russian/Chinese disinformation, propaganda and hacking, it seems to the only way would be to set up a national-level firewall that blocks any traffic containing certain words, phrases or images, and to block foreign search engines, social media sites and mobile apps. In other words, to give up any pretence on being a 'free' country become just as restrictive as Russia and China.
the west doesn't care if you espouse communism cos it knows no one wants to live under communism, not even self professed communists. but russia (adam curtis said it was russia so it must have been them) found a way to use information against the west, not by espousing a competing ideology, but by identifying and exaceberating the tensions in hetrodox populations, and by amplifying illiberalism, which is all the things you're not really supposed to say, and can often be punished for saying, and which have, as a result, a kind of seductive force
like white people are being replaced in their own homelands, like black people have a propensity for violence, like gays are disgusting etc etc etc
and that has made the notion of a western firewall at least conceiveable
