I don't think that it was done on purpose cos a) it makes them look really stupid and b) it's definitely breaking the law. They could in fact should lose their jobs even in this administration, and theoretically they could (should) go to jail. It's illegal to use Signal and it's illegal to leak it to a journalist. I can believe that they would do something like this but not in such a ham-fisted way.

Also the stuff he's revealed is just the tip of the iceberg, apparently they sent loads of really specific stuff about when where who they were gonna bomb - and he copied it so their denials make them look even more stupid.

I think you're underestimating how incompetent this lot are. Everyone in Trump's inner circle has been selected on the basis of loyalty to the boss man, rather than ability. Hegseth in particular is known to be a messy alcoholic.

Plus it's hard to see how this benefits them.

i don't think anyone cares about laws anymore. i think the journalist guy was added on purpose because they don't give a fuck, and if you read the chats they are very hard on europe and maybe that's what they wanted to communicate among others.

It just doesn't read this way to me. Yeah they don't care about laws but someone somewhere might - and it's too much of a risk I think.
Also Hegseth denied it at first - it's funny that the cult are divided into two groups - the first group are saying "this is ridiculous you cannot possibly believe that Vance etc would really be dumb enough to be compromised like this" and the second group - perhaps realising that it's hard to deny something that's been confirmed - are going "Ah no biggie, it's just like when you texted your aunt instead of your mate about knobbing that stripper" - and then a small third group have popped up going "Libs have fallen for the five dimensional snakes and ladders once again, this was clearly deliberate".
