I think all these categories fall down under scrutiny. People consciously chose to make house and jungle. They were abiding by the scenes' respective criteria when they chose to use certain breaks, gear, samples, titles, arrangements.

I don't think framing this stuff as not being designed to dance to's the right way to go about it. I'd say it's more that there's a layer of self-consciousness to it in the same way there is with postmodern fiction. It's aware of itself as dance music and plays with the form, but it's still dance music.
