I remember the house fire sequence being cool.

It is quite muted though. One of those 90 minute films you'd swear were much longer.

The ending when the police catch up to them is one of the best bits, them all fawning over him as he chucks out souvenirs and revels in the spotlight.

Has anyone seen that film Smoking Aces? I guess after Pulp Fiction the market was suddenly flooded with Tarantino rip-offs. Often this took the form of the director inserting a scene with some gang member talking about pop music for two mins in a sequence that doesn't fit even vaguely with the rest of the film, before the director went back to business as usual, pleased he had shown the audience that he was the next great, idiosyncratic one-off unique auteur like Tarantino.

Some of these films are shameless and just embarrassing to watch. I saw Lucky Number Slevin the other day which is one of the very worst... apart from Smoking Aces which tries so desperately hard to be cool, its difficult to watch, you feel sorry for the actors as you observe them through your fingers.

So I was surprised to see this... at first, and then it made perfect sense.

Smokin' Aces has its issues, but there's also a good deal of entertainment value here and an overall fun mix of comedy, action, thrills, and drama. Funnily enough, it's also a movie that acclaimed filmmaker Terrence Malick is a big fan of, even though the type of film Smokin' Aces is couldn't be further than the kind of thing Malick usually makes (his stuff is slower, generally less flashy, and usually far from action-packed).

The only possible conclusion, what with this and with his own recent efforts, is that he's just totally lost it. He had it and it's gone and he has no grasp of good or bad etc any more. He's just flailing around going what if I film a butterfly dying in slow-mo for an hour...? Would that be good? It's all a cry for help from an artist who long ago lost his muse and whose late career is an extended sad and pathetic dying moan.

Any way this is relevant to Malick? Its fine if not, I don't disagree re: Smokin' Aces. I used to think it was bad but fun, but I just recently caught some of it and don't think its quite as fun anymore.

It's actually among that strange category of movies with staggeringly high-profile ensemble casts but which nonetheless manages to be far worse than the sum of its parts. Perhaps the leading example is Movie 43. I haven't seen that weird Casino Royale one with Orson Welles and Woody Allen, but I suspect thats another one.

Some of these make me wonder about the funding, like either there was a tasteless producer who called in a bunch of favors, or else the production itself was some kind of money-laundering scheme.

A counterexample to that kind of film would be, I'd argue, the Avengers movies. For what they are and for what they aim for, they tend to do a great job of slotting in dozens of a-list actors into their respective (admittedly rarely substantial) character arcs. Say what you may about the films themselves, but logistically I maintain that these films are excellent examples of super ensembles, in terms of plot logistics.

Ocean's Eleven could be another counter example (the Clooney ones, not the Sinatra one).

I also thought Winter Kills worked pretty well (Toshiro Mifune I thought got kinda snubbed though).

Monuments Men didn't work, I thought.

French Dispatch I also think wasn't greater than the sum of its parts (Grand Budapest pulled it off, in my opinion).
