I'd say confusion is a crucial psychedelic component, confusion and bewilderment.

It doesn't have to be though does it can also you can be enlightened, an ascended master on the mountain top, light pouring out your head which is a thousand petalled lotus unfolding

Can you get to that point without first experiencing bewilderment?

You can trip without bewilderment for sure, but maybe you need to have had confusing and frightening experiences previously, on other occasions

Around the time Cramer did his list, like gave me a very small dose of acid. It didn’t do very much other than fill me with this warm, golden euphoria (which I never usually got with acid).

I listened to Alexander oneil’s ‘If you were here tobifht’ Over and over for what might have been hour or two.

i’m not talking about a love supreme or pharaoh sanders (and of course ‘tomorrow never knows’ is a very much ahead of its time). i mean the doors, pink floyd, greatful dead, sgt pepper, et al. how are they psychedelic?

ah, ok, thought this was just a general thread about what makes music psychedelic but luka politely corrected me.

Probably already mentioned but I imagine they were among the first to break out of three-minute versus-chorus-versus box of pop and rock music, delving into longer free-flowing jams and more oblique lyrics beyond "I want to hold your hand".

also, it was the first music for headphones.

What’s missing from the 60’s music is that geometry. The kaleidoscopic thing. The world constructed from automated systems.

I like that Bombora one (on the first page) but it sounds like Joe Meek to me with all that compression. I mean it wasn't unique. Probably arrived at independently cos I doubt they knew Joe Meek in Australia in 63 or whatever.

It undoubtedly exists

But there's plenty of woolly and/or dreamy, whatever etc biz

For example acid folk is almost entirely a 70s thing

And plenty of 60s drug music is grim, overtly or indirectly

That's presumably because it wasn't at that stage in the timeline. You could still be pastoral. Although the transition must have been well underway. Version supply an apposite Pynchon quote or something

The first image that comes to mind when I think 70s drug music is Sly Stone and his infamous guitar case full of drugs.

san francisco was not psychedelic. i can't believe they all get away with pretending otherwise
psychedelic SF was in the live experience

mid-late 60s live Dead was apparently similar to contemporary live Floyd (and not entirely unlike the Velvet Underground), endless live jamming for a tripped out audience

their 1st show was at a Kesey Acid Test, they were financially backed by Oswald Stanley, etc, so they were definitely integrated into psychedelic culture

it's true that Dead never really made it onto record, unlike all the proto-jam band waffling and the fucking mandolins (I can't stand the Dead, personally)

Maybe it was more apocalyptic in the Sixties
well the true apocalyptic LA is Mike Davis City of Quartz etc LA, no?

endless subdivision sprawl, environmental folly, corruption, racism

and/or Nathaniel West, James Ellroy, and so on

pretty much the same

either way the idea being that it exists underneath the myth of endless sunshine

the brighter the sunshine, the darker the shadows, kinda thing

ofc either way it's like any city, millions of people going about their lives

The tougher ends of hardcore and jungle, squawy jazz
this is where I'm like, I don't even know what to say

we have fundamentally different conceptions of psychedelically potent music

which is fine, that's a subjective thing

but I think yall are basically unqualified to pass any kind of judgment on psychedelic guitar music

just like I wouldn't talk on jazz, since 1) I don't really like most of it 2) I don't know enough about

60 psychedelia isn't about the music anyway, as I/others explained upthread

it's about the opening up of potentialities for the truly psychedelic, which mostly happened in the 1st half of the 70s (before it all got bogged down in prog)

i.e. Holger Czukay's ears being opened to rock by one of his students playing him "I Am the Walrus"

I will give the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows" tbf, that is a truly psychedelic jam

unlike say, the treacle of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds"

Bedoin tribes ascending
From the egg into the flower
Alpha information sending
State within the heaven shower
From disciples the unending
Subtleties of river power
They slip inside this house as they pass by
If your limbs begin dissolving
In the water that you tread
All surroundings are evolving
In the stream that clears your head
Find yourself a caravan
Like Noah must have led
And slip inside this house as you pass by
Slip inside this house as you pass by
True conception, knowing why
Brings even more than meets the eye
Slip inside this house as you pass by
In this dark we call creation
We can be and feel and know
From an effort, comfort station
That's surviving on the go
There's infinite survival in
The high baptismal glow
Slip inside this house as you pass by
There is no season when you are grown
You are always risen from the seeds you've sown
There is no reason to rise alone
Other stories given have sages of their own
Live where your heart can be given
And your life starts to unfold
In the forms you envision
In this dream that's ages old
On the river layer is the only sayer
You receive all you can hold
Like you've been told
Every day's another dawning
Give the morning winds a chance
Always catch your thunder yawning
Lift your mind into the dance
Sweep the shadows from your awning
Shrink the fourfold circumstance
That lies outside this house don't pass it by
Higher worlds that you uncover
Light the path you want to roam
You compare there and discover
You won't need a shell of foam
Twice born gypsies care and keep
The nowhere of their former home
They slip inside this house as they pass by
Slip inside this house as you pass by
You think you can't, you wish you could
I know you can, I wish you would
Slip inside this house as you pass by
Four and twenty birds of Maya
Baked into an atom you
Polarized into existence
Magnet heart from red to blue
To such extent the realm of dark
Within the picture it seems true
But slip inside this house and then decide
All your lightning waits inside you
Travel it along your spine
Seven stars receive your visit
Seven seals remain divine
Seven churches filled with spirit
Treasure from the angels' mine
Slip inside this house as you pass by
Slip inside this house as you pass by
The space you make has your own laws
No longer human gods are cause
The center of this house will never die
There is no season when you are grown
You are always risen from the seeds you've sown
There is no reason to rise alone
Other stories given have sages of their own
Draw from the well of unchanging
Its union nourishes on
In the right re-arranging
Till the last confusion is gone
Water-brothers trust in the ultimust
Of the always singing song they pass along
One-eyed men aren't really reigning
They just march in place until
Two-eyed men with mystery training
Finally feel the power fill
Three-eyed men are not complaining
They can yo-yo where they will
They slip inside this house as they pass by
Don't pass it by
