what elevates pop music over dance music?

"the frictionless quality of online life is sometimes experienced as the lack of resistance (click a button and its there!) and sometimes it is experienced as the inability to gain purchase. the inability to affect anything at all."

Ambient sounds to study/relax/chill to.

I find this quite interesting that studying as a labour intensive task to maximise labour productivity is put in the same box as chill and relax, something much harder to do in our hyper-speedy society. It reminds me about what I was saying to an Italian friend of mine. noone smokes weed to chill, it is just smoked to get into a vegetated state. that's the appeal of xanax mindset I think, it's a regression from the most subversive aspects of skunk. the autistic closing up and the inability to socialise is turned into an over excited infant anti-social sociality. whereas skunk is not panic but your mind playing tricks on you and semi-gnostic schizophrenia. that is it more than paranoia per se.

In retrospect, one of K-Punk’s best musical contributions was to elevate Girls Aloud over dance music. If you look back at their greatest hits they practically carried a British pop decade before Calvin Harris got going, and he had to go to LA to do it.

Just thought I’d lob that Twitter-style think piece into the flow of conversation. Peace, out.

He doesn't wear a mask. He doesn't get on top of the decks and jump off. Calvin Harris doesn't need gimmicks to help his music stand out. The Scottish producer simply writes incredible, soul-touching hooks and brain-nesting melodies that can't be denied.

Sometimes, he works with giant superstar vocalists, but he didn't need Rihanna and Florence Welch to get his foot in the door. He actually sings on his own tracks just as much as he features guests, because he is a one-man hit machine unlike anything you've ever witnessed before.

From his days as a scrawny dark-haired electro dude to today's chart-topping underwear model reality, Harris has pumped out the jams with a deftness that can't be matched. It's almost unnatural how great his songs can be, but thankfully they are 100 percent genuine house realness. Here’s a list of Craner's favourite Calvin Harris songs to date.

1.

This is sublime, one of the greatest pop confections this island created in a long time.

Yeah that's good. I like how she looks like a primary school teacher after a glam makeover. The most mundane vocal performance. Can hardly call it singing. That's crucial to British pop that aspect. Making magic out of rubbish like blue peter craft projects, turning a washing up liquid bottle into a rocket ship

3.

Pre-LA, making do with girls from The Only Way Is Essex, brilliant British pop, slightly shoddy yet full of life, freezing girls stepping out of cabs with no coats, short skirts and stilletoes, fuelled by cheap booze, in Sheffield or Cardiff in November.

Maybe it’s No 1 because I really fancy her.

Im honestly surprised you like Calvin Harris it seems completely counter to your aesthetic sensibilities. sniffing scrotum American PE changing room trance arpeggios and ludicrously cartoonish jump-up like drops.

It’s a good thing to have surprising tastes, though? I’m not rigid with music, I don’t trap my tastes with ideas.
