It's more down to having world's 4th most obese population. Government has little to do with it, the disease, such as it was, made its natural way through a sick, metabolically-compromised population that had been spared significant flu in the year prior. Same in the US.

As for long covid - depressed vegans, already chronically inflamed by their diet and lifestyle.

By "4th", you presumably mean "36th"?

Some of the countries above us are microstates, sure, but the UK is at any rate less obese than New Zealand, where all of 25 people have died from the virus.

Point is, while I don't doubt that obesity makes you more susceptible to getting badly ill or dying, it doesn't explain why other countries that are about as far as we are, or fatter in some cases, have fared far better.
