When are you an interesting writer?

Really though realistically no random is ever going to notice what you write. People dedicate their lives to getting an audience and fail. You're not going to achieve it by accident

Not going to happen. Not even if you wrote the most outrageous and provocative thing about the most overheated topic. That's just diseased paranoia trying to stop you doing something good for yourself

I'm thinking about writing something. I need a project. Something long term I can work at and get a sense of personal progress from. I'm thinking about starting now while I'm still relatively young and still able to fuel the writing by fantasies of raw hidden talent.

I don't think it will be any good but I need to fucking start something coz I don't feel optimistic about anything really besides the prospects of creating something valuable.

I cant do writing. Ive only a handful of times ever tried to write for its own sake and each time end up spending 2 hours working myself into a quietly psychotic fit and spending the rest of my day in the worst possible mood with maybe two sentences to show for it.

i had this sequence playing out in my head where the board coaxes the timid and fearful version to reveal his secret private manuscript, everyone expecting this measured, gentle account and then it's a complete cesspool of depravity and chauvanism that apalls even luka

I find it much more difficult to get started with writing than with music or drawing or whatever. It feels more structured and as though you have to have a definite starting point, this is what I want to write about, whereas you can just doodle with drawing or painting or play about with a synth with music.

I can relate to this. I have no idea how to strike that note that's just interesting and then just keep it going. I feel like I'm constantly falling in and out of interesting.

The contradictory advice out there doesn't help either. You should work quickly, be instinctive, but you should also think about what you're doing and not just fire out any old rubbish. You shouldn't temper it, let yourself rein it in and dilute it, but you don't want bloated, unedited, unstructured garbage either. It's a minefield.

You just find what works for you. Everyone is different.

The other one that gets me is people saying you have to have something you want to say, you have to want to write. if I give that any thought at all then I realise I have nothing to say and don't care about writing.

Why do you spend all night on here writing then?

my longstanding opinion has been that version should review retromania on his blog. you have the book, there'd be no sudden bolt of inspiration needed, and it's basically a series of tangents so you wouldn't have to take an overarching position on it, you could just say this bit reminds me of this thing i found interesting, i don't buy his interpretation here because..., etc. i'd have fun reading something like that at any rate.

a personal hangup for me is how ideas can lose their magic once you try to present them to the outside world. suddenly what you where thinking seems stupid or pedestrian rather that revelatory. that combined with the difficulty of phrasing and organizing what i'm thinking about into decent writing have made me go "actually, fuck it" and abandon whatever i was going to write so many times.

apparently the reason berkley's treatise only has a "part 1" is that he wrote a part 2 but dropped the manuscript in a puddle or something and couldn't be bothered to rewrite it. same mentality perhaps.
