I've seen that big bi thing before funnnily enough. Running up that hill was on poisonous darts list of (might get the title a bit wrong) white songs that were a hit in the hood

and "Running Up That Hill" is about as banging/non-fey as she gets

I do have a soft spot for "Hung Up", albeit almost entirely for ABBA.

Madonna took the David Bowie cultural vampire model and ran with it, for better and worse

definitely 100% respect as an auteur of her own brand, performance, curation, etc, even it's long descended into grim Rolling Stones-style territory

she also paved the way - not alone, but by far most prominently I have to think - for Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, etc

noone knows about Kate Bush outside of England, France and US. Madonna is superstar. on that metric alone she wins. who cares if the music is good or not. that's the aim of all pop.

I hate this song so so much, viscerally loathe it that it's become one of my favourite guilty pleasures when I'm feeling masochistic. Kate Bush doesn't trigger the same amount of revulsion in me, I'm just left nonplussed.

Lucky Star, Papa Don't Preach, Into the Groove, Like a Prayer are my favourite Madonna tunes. I like Beautiful Stranger, Hung Up, Music and stuff too though.

well it should be because they both suck artistically. it's just that one was better at tapping into a zeitgeist whilst the other looks antiquated and quaint.
