Stumbled upon this pair of beauts from the early 90s the other day:





3 more volumes apparently. Had seen them before and forgot how lovely they were. Perfectly captured, a time when there was still a sense of fun and hope in the air. Compared to reading an article or listening to a mix, there's another set of elements to watching a period presented like this. When you hear the language used and see the clothes, feel the vibe from the people. There's something wonderfully immersive about it. Also, I had no idea video magazines were even a thing. Idk, it feels like we look back at this time a lot and our idea become projections, so there's something about these little capsules that allow you to connect that little bit more and almost time travel.

I guess period documentaries also fit into this box. What else? No purely music videos/shows or interviews necessary. We've all seen a million of them. I want the deep transportational cuts. Features on scenes, walks with the artist through their neighborhood, all that shit.

What you got, dissensus?

Totally different to those two, but equally immersive. Hanging out with an angsty Loughborough teen trying to find himself in the early 90s. There's something so relateable here.

lol, looks like he's still very much the same guy almost 30 years later judging by the comment he left 24 hours ago on that video.

Harold being Harold, 90s NYC, Meth and Ghost. Skate videos are great for this sort of thing because you get a snapshot of where skating was at the time in terms of fashion, tricks, spots, cameras etc, but you also get a snapshot of cities, the general public and so on.

the op was originally longer and i mentioned skate videos in it. some of them were so creatiely put together. as a non skater, but hanger out with skaters i always loved the bits in between the skating more, and the soundtracks.

good contribs so far! this feels like a broad but cohesive genre. feel free to add your own ideas about what it actually is though*

i guess the Up series fits in here



*there's the transportation/time travel aspect, there's the intimacy, a bit of escapism? hauntology?

Did you ever watch the AWS vids? They were great for that, loads of Super 8 footage and whatnot. The Antihero and Stereo stuff too,

Doin' Time in Times Square, by Charlie Ahearn

Shot from his window, the forty minute video, called "Doin' Time in Times Square," includes everything you'd expect from candid 1980s Times Square footage—slow mo knock-out punches, neon XXX signs, plenty of cameos from the NYPD, and chaos. The chaos, however, is interspersed with quiet scenes from inside the apartment where all of this was being filmed from. It's been described as "the home video from hell," and was shown at the New York Film Festival in the 1990s.

This one's great. Supreme commissioned a vid in '95 and it's this short montage of NYC with a little skating thrown in, but mostly just the city, and soundtracked by Coltrane's A Love Supreme,
