I know I always abuse everyone when they post a link to a boring article in a boring newspaper but Jesy Nelson, cancelled.

Jesy Nelson, a woman I've never heard of before, has had to leave a pop group I've never heard of due to constant online abuse. In Korea it's normal for this sustained, relentless abuse to lead to the suicide of the celebrity target. The Ultimate Cancellation.

Ariel Pink won't get cancelled they love him too much. Being a dickhead was always part of his act in any case.

I think about how Kerry Katona was cancelled after being filmed snorting cocaine - her whole brand was girl-next-door, scheme-bird-turned-good, likeable I'm A Celeb winner with a nice ad deal based on "Mums go to Iceland." Her whole position as a celebrity was untenable.

Whereas Kate Moss was a fashion model and nobody was surprised to discover that someone in that industry, even as a mother, was ripped to the tits every weekend.

In a way having right-wing opinions as an auteur artist figure is a sort of maverick badge that makes you seem more interesting. Because it's unusual, isn't it? As boxedjoy says it's about context, too - Kid Rock being a Trumpist isn't surprising or intriguing in any way, you just figure he's a moron.

The example that comes to mind currently is James Elroy.

I don't think it makes you more interesting it just marks you out as a dick but it doesn't mean your work is bad. Ellroy is still better than any of his contemporaries by a million miles. But he's a dick.

the thing with cancellations is that if you could only enjoy work produced by people who align with your worldview you could never enjoy anything:

a) the likelihood of someone being exactly where you stand on all major social issues is particularly slim
b) you would drive yourself crazy trying to figure out where everyone's position actually is

For years Taylor Swift was assumed to be a Trump supported because she was from Texas. This is despite her music containing very obvious pro-feminist, sex-positive, empowered lyrics that would be completely at odds with the message of "grab them by the pussy." Her endoresement of two Democrat candidates made perfect sense to anyone who was paying attention.

She is a heroine in Nashville. In the Country Music Hall of Fame she has a whole wing of the museum that she sponsored. She effectively has two careers, like the way that Cliff Richard had a whole separate set of songs that he would play at Evangelical Christian music festivals.
