I'm considering ditching a Burzum record I have. I still kind of like some of the tunes, but I just never feel like listening to him - partly because I'm just not that arsed and partly because of his politics.

That's me, I don't stop watching/reading someone, not at all. Someone had a go at me on fb for watching Polanski and I was kinda bemused. Even though I just said I don't get how he's still free. I mean I downloaded them, I didn't give him any money, maybe I'd baulk at that... maybe. It's probably not a consistent or coherent position but when you think about it, if I refused to stream Cul de Sac or something out of principle who would suffer more, Polanski or me?

That bloke who was out on day release and saved a bunch of people restraining a terrorist was an interesting one. I remember seeing a lot of back and forth as to whether one act outweighs the other.

it is complicated when you discover the dirt on someone though, completely gutting, can ruin a relationship forever, and it throws the good times you had together into a disturbing light.

like when luis suarez got caught probably saying something racist to evra, i was really cross with him. then he scored that hatrick against norwich the following season, and you had to hand it to him, that was a great hattrick.

Joking aside I think I've seen/heard a few friends talking recently about falling out with friends cos of politics. And if it's a proper falling out then that is cancelling isn't it? I think that's a relatively new development in my own personal experience in fact. Maybe people have got more worked up now with Brexit, Trumpvirus etc etc

Joking aside I think I've seen/heard a few friends talking recently about falling out with friends cos of politics. And if it's a proper falling out then that is cancelling isn't it? I think that's a relatively new development in my own personal experience in fact. Maybe people have got more worked up now with Brexit, Trumpvirus etc etc

big part of cancelling is dragging peoples name through the dirt though isn't it? more than just cutting that person out of your life

I can see it happening more easily now yeah. I think it's different when people are very vocal about their bad politics. The friends I was talking about, they don't really care, they're not waving placards, they just might say some off colour things sometimes. like, they don't read, they don't care, it's not part of their identity.

Sometimes I used to get upset with Craner cos his politics obviously are a big part of his identity it does make you feel a bit weird but I never wanted to cancel him or stop being his mate at all. I'd just get mad at him but what can you do it's what they believe and it's in good faith

I really struggle with one of my grandparents. She thinks Boris is brilliant because he's funny, says people are only poor because they're lazy and recently said the Chinese are a "wicked people" who deserve to die.

it's a powerful weapon so i feel we need to work out where and how that line gets drawn

really a central lever of social conflict, often more effective than the law. especially in toppling powerful people, we need it! but we need to hone and refine the tool if we are to use it to guide the likes of Boris towards the guillotine

part of that should be to get rid of double standards, codify it

Interesting but a bit of a tangent that the Tories used to be the party of righteousness, of order and moral fibre, compared to those Labour hippies, someone was saying the other day that Labour should be somehow less prone to ethical scandal, things have shifted
