becasue as Wyndham Lewis, among others, kept saying, there arent any inidivudals in a mass culture.

you dont have a unique 'self' to express. it's not there.

Bit late on this but strong disagree. It's the market and consumer which has changed. The weirdos are still out there. This is why third's points about mental illness are worth noting. Was either Richard Thompson or Joe Boyd I heard in interview saying how the weird, depressed wallflowers (talking about Nick Drake) were seen as interesting back in the 60s. Nowadays it's 'what's wrong with you? Take a pill.' People are ashamed of it. Or, they go emo, anime, goth, hipster. Convert it into something acceptable. Become "well adjusted."

i think what i was saying is that being a weirdo being maladjusted, is normal, partiucuarly for a self-professed 'artist'

a generic type

Infinite number of pseuds out there. Playing up to the type to gain purchase because 'artist' as label carries social weight. But it's easy to spot them. I think what you see as generic is what I would see as faker.

i dont know how much i am invested in what i am saying here necessarily but what i want to argue is that 'the real thing' is also a generic type

There are those who can't help it and then there are those who's eyes dart around the room to check their nuances landed. Waiting for the likes etc.

The 'real' thing is beyond authenticity. It's about people who are channels for something above themselves and then those who wish to be.

yeah, probably. i mean, i am the real thing. im the best writer in the world by common consent. no one has ever seriously denied it. but as you say its something outside of the self. its nothing to do with my unique individual self. in that sense i cant claim credit for it. its just a method for getting out of the way.

i understand what you’re getting at but this is more mythologising. What about someone like Michael Jackson?

...Because there isn't a catch-all underground/alternative culture? Anymore?

As we've ready discussed it's all been co-opted. But that doesn't mean new ideas couldn't be thunk up. That's what I wanted to talk about in the KLF thread. Had totally forgotten about padraig (u.s.)'s counterculture thread. Have it open on another tab for later. From a quick scan it looks as though no new ideas were born. I'd really love a creative session instead of a critical one, on this subject. Would be fun as much as anyhhing.
