Why are white rappers more inclined to comedy?

Is it because there's something inherently comical about a white guy rapping, so the best approach is to lean into and own it?



Obviously there are exceptions to this aplenty - Skinnyman springs to mind. I guess he has the credentials of being from a London council estate, going to jail, etc. Same goes for Potter Payper.

Can you imagine a white middle class rapper that was good? Mike Skinner definitely struck a chord with people but that feels a bit like cheating. He's not rapping per se, just bleating mournfully. Can you imagine a white, middle class Nas? If not, why not?

There's a terrible shame attached to being middle class, rightfully so. It's correct to feel ashamed. There's an instinct to self effacement.

It's partly about credulity. The gap between what's presented, boasted about, and the expectations about what a rapper should be and how believable it seems coming from that body and that voice. which trades on all kinds of assumptions and fantasies about class and race.

Agree with Luka's sentiment re. Louis Theoreux, I can't look at it. I've got insomnia and feel delicate. A white person rapping by RHYMING WORDS! it will upset me.
