I love Tom and Goldberry, I think they're really great

I think there's something to be said for Tolkien and Joyce being cousins, and Goldberry goddess of the river being a kind of Annaliviaplurabelle

The intro sections on hobbits are (Davenport tells us) apparently modelled on Tolkien's Kentucky roommate's stories about country bumpkins, down to the names (e.g. Baggins)
I stumbled across the existence of Guy Davenport last night via goodreads and downloaded a sample of "The Geography of the Imagination: Forty Essays". I was intrigued by what I read, but thought "don't be silly and buy this book, corpsey, you've already got about a million books and you're burning through your flat white funds". But THEN I saw there was a chapter entitled "Hobbiton" and I just had to buy it.

I was expecting an Edmund Wilson style assassination of all that I held dear (especially as he begins by describing how boring and incomprehensible it was being lectured by Tolkien), so was pleasantly surprised to read an essay that didn't seem hostile to LOTR and in fact describes them (for all I know non-ironically) as "the most wonderful adventures since Ariosto and Boiardo".

Made me wonder if Kenner was also a LOTR fan. We could then add him, Davenport, and Auden to our list of high-brow hobbit fans.
