production levels on the new drmzu release are very high, the kaang track is so good. really intrigued to know what the drmzu guys were making before they started that label, cuz you don't just come out with rhythms like this from the off. maybe soulful house
Antony Ranz is worth a follow on IG for his live sessions, does at least one every weekend, always good vibes. mixture of afrohouse, uk amapiano, proto-funky, sometimes a bit of tech house

Antonio Pascal had a solid 200-300 viewers on his video livestream on Mixcloud on Saturday night, before he ended the stream to go work a nightshift. worth following for weekends in. it looked like one of the highest watched on Mixcloud at the time, definitely highest without any corporate or events company sponsorship

slightly unrelated from the Ldn focus of the thread but a bit of amapiano features on shows I've casually checked on The Lot Radio recently, basically the NTS of New York, and in other sets here and there. noticed this amapiano bandcamp release by a New York producer. none of the tracks really stood out but i can see there being a small crossover in New York if this gets picked up more there, black Atlantic in effect. i don't know much about NYC but it doesn't seem like there's the same size of underground house scene there as Ldn, so will be interesting to see who runs with it.
this sound benefits from this a lot, the bleed into and out of different sounds, gqom etc

more on the New York crossover, just came across this 'amadancehall' EP by a Jamaican producer in Brooklyn. came out in April before the momapiano EP and it's much more up my street. you can hear a hint of that dancehall influence, maybe just in a few melodies and the way the bass is a bit higher in the mix like it is in Jamaica/Brooklyn's flex dance music

Supa d, taffa, scottie d, dj naughty, d malice, pioneer, bakonga (aka roska), wigman, lr groove even mak 10 - all the exact same names from the very start of uk funky 13 years ago now at the very least (and some of em alot further back). It's a scene of old geezers. Not bad music but very difficult to get excited about for that reason alone.

Yeah the MCs are just as if not even older than the the djs/producers. Obviously Uk funky had some older figures involved, but mostly it wasnt mature proper house like this is, it was babysteps house music. Marcus Nasty should take credit for bringing in the youngers and displaced grime producers and shaking it up. This scene lacks that injection of youthful energy

Fully formed mature house music is usually quite boring, better when people dont really know what they're doing and using the form as a jumping off point
its like mans forget circle moaning about the skank track and all. revisionist history. I rate what Marcus Nasty did, frankly it was the best thing that could have happened to UK funky. But don't pretend the more soulful proper uk funky bods didn't turn their nose up at it. Even with all the early dark 4x4 and 8 bar type tunes people like Spoony in garage days absolutely refused to touch them.
did you listen to this track? cuz this stuff doesn't sound like fully formed mature (boring) house to me, this one's got a proper dark energy and a dub influence
i'm not into the old/young duality either, but even if i accepted it for a minute, writing this off due to a lack of "youthful energy" seems wrong because
1) the tracks are good - probably some of the most experimental production and rhythms in an otherwise quite sonically conservative larger scene (house) since funky (mostly got the south african influence to thank for that)
2) it wasn't just scotti dee, none of the guys you've mentioned really got their dues if we're thinking about the wider music press and ppl who get their knowledge from that. roska is the only one whose name rings out and has been covered, and that was probably just until the mid-10s

Generally, probably correct especially in today's preset-environment where a fully formed house track easily comes pre-packaged. Though increasingly the raw stuff often sounds generic in its own way as well. Then there's stuff like Luomo which both has impeccable production and still are quite engaging.
