This is/was the attraction to CV. For a period they were inventing sound worlds (soundscapes?) that no-one else was. It had a dislocating effect, brought full circle by repetitive beats that enhanced the overall paradoxes and juxtapositions. Now and again someone captures variables of it - Sun Ra, Devo, Coil, Nurse With Wound and Andrew Liles - everyone will have their own take on where this quality is present and/or manifests. It being a music thread, tried to stick to music examples.

Alien is a lazy term (even though I’ve used it), given we don’t have access to ET’s record collection. As far as grizzled Ukrainians and Andre the Giant go, I have no clue.

Where does outsider music fit into here? Familiar ideas made alien through presentation alone. Do the shaggs belong in this thread?

hmm, i hadn't thought of that. would be curious to hear a specific example if you can think of any. guess to me some outsider music feels like the opposite of alien.

if i contribute to this thread it'll become a constant scream of my own tunes. but seriously, this is like a discussion from 2005 or whenever it was everyone was talking about burial, pitch stretching voices into other genders, using or rather "re-contextualising" your recordings of fire or whatever. a lot of these comments sound to me very much like writers getting poetic, who don't know much about the theory and practice of music, like that kodwo one, i mean he's right"in a sense" but rewinding a tune doesn't somehow magically reverse the flow of time. when i'm making my noises i start from the principle if it sounds good, it is good.

other worlds have other time-conditions, other gravity, other atmosphere. this affects the way objects move and sound travels and so on and so forth.

yeah and i remember jim o'rourke talking about stuff like a car door slamming in his music. i'm just saying luke is doing what i'm saying kodwo is. which is discussing in literary terms, stuff that have nothing to with music production. he won't like that so i'm backed into a corner. look at (or listen to rather) symphonie pour une porte et un soupir. the titular sounds are being "recontextualised", sure, or whatever word you like, but recontextualised as instruments.the music is actually nothing to do with any particular door or sighing person. they are changed from references to music! i mean when you play a party record with a siren, like @hint, no one thinks for a second police or ambulance is coming. that'd be like saying oxide and neutrino wanted to soundtrack casualty! it's backwards.

i agree there are contextual issues and innovations settle down into formalism and so on and so forth but what kodwo was trying to do was to hear with virgin ears. which the drugs helped him to do. it's very much not a literary project. it's an accurate represetnation of how we listen when our ears and our imaginations are working as they should.
