you lose a huge amount by trying to create from scratch as well. you lose all those rich associations which connect your story with all the other stories.

how do you square this with surrealist practice especially in visual arts? they were trying to conjure something imaginary which still had strong ties to "rich associations" of one kind or another

I was just gonna mention that option - there are the sea people in Wheel of Time who live on a load of boats in the ocean and have super fast ships cos they can control the winds.

i think the two major liberal platiutudes sufi is guilty of is 1)thinking exoticism is anything but brilliant and
2)having a mistaken idea of what originality consists of and the value of originality

I think that was a lie though cos he always has like obscure reggae sevens in his lists of favourites. Or did I imagine that?

I think what i'm getting at is that the borrowing is all rather superficial - a few names in weird syllables,maybe some odd customs or outfits,
by the late 20thC these writers had access to deeper understanding if they could be arsed (assuming they never bothered to travel)
