Beast of Burden
Gabrielle, Michelle Gayle, Shola Ama, All Saints, Eternal. I have a bland affection for them all. They were second rate, and their records cheap and tacky compared to US R&B. But they were doing their best and they were our girls!

Those girl groups and people like Michelle gayle, they were not very good like you say, but they created some kind of platform and let people know things could be done. Miss dynamite! Where are the new ones nowadays???

Yes, they also boosted the visibility and appeal of UK Garage. Gabrielle and Shola Ama in particular. I like them. I'm not being nasty about them. I thought they were a force for good.

I was playing one of Rudewhys bass line tunes and then next thing that came up on YouTube was this set by the 'people just do nothing' boys and weirdly, shola ama guests about 20 mins in. It's very listenable

england itself in being dowdy and defeated sets limits on what english r&b can be. it cant be passionate it cant be triumphant. its all set under grey pleated cloud and greasy drizzle, counting pennies from its purse.

Mabel and Mahlia and Jorja Smith all spring to mind, fully-formed opinions still to be assessed though
