It's perhaps more difficult than dealing with openly racist people when you come up against someone who's just kind of normal, but completely oblivious to how offensive the stuff they're saying is.

I was sat outside with my dad a while back and he insisted on making all these dodgy jokes and comments whilst I became increasingly anxious my neighbours, some of whom are a married gay couple, were also outside and having to hear the shit he's spouting.

"Now don't go calling your father a racialist Edward"

"I'm not not a racialist lad I hate all races just the same"

"Daaaaad"

Yeah cause calling them out feels, to them, like an accusation out of left field, at least sometimes.

Like a couple of my friends from college who voted for Trump, albeit dispassionately, who would now and then let something slip out. But to them, racists were people who were actually in the klan, actually honoring that tradition, not people who cracked a joke here and there. Goes to show how different these paradigms can be, based on the environment you were raised in.

It was also a strangely polarized area in upstate NY. There were areas white people didn't go, and areas black people didn't go, all within seemingly a few miles of each other.

But if early exposure is the key factor, I'd imagine social media would have an impact there. Thats partially why I think much of the alt-right consists of ironic bigotry, which in effect has largely the same consequences.

edit: that is, it can't be attributed as much to ignorance, seeing as social media spreads pretty widely, but perhaps attributable to an opposition to (neo)liberalism.

Is Sellers cancelled, or is your Dad for mimicking Sellers in The Party?

My old man was great at birthday parties. 'See her, all she does is eat fuckin cake and make jokes about eating fuckin cake. Regular Jo Brand, so she is, keep an eye on my pies'.

I dunno about cancelled, but some of it's definitely "of its time" and still informs my dad's humour.
