Types of Contemporary Guru.

the contemporary shift might be in the ubiquity of guruing, which is what i was getting at in my self help thread.

how does this relate to loss of trust in religious institutions? is there a power vacuum and some dispersion of spiritual authority bleeding across all cultural hierarchies

i think we all have a guru within, its a mode we can adopt. at the extreme messiah complex, but the voice of authority, the parent etc etc

And in our massive audiences enabled by social media we have a clergy, and theres a social, woke pressure . fear of damntation and cancellation. guru as the inverse of troll

Fuzzy thoughts here. But again there’s something in our exposure to massive audiences and all the weird behavioural modulation that comes with it

Gurus as fridge magnet statements of hope cliches.

Working in mental health, you always wonder why a certain personality profile gets a platform and draws an audience. With young men Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson seemed to tap into something, or really that should align more appropriately with exploit a yearning tendency.

Some of these ex military psychos too, Ant Middleton is a UK example, can apply their bs to multiple aspects of demand - physical health, mental health as militarised conditioned response, fear of failure, economic gain, anyone who ever thought guns were cool etc. When I was growing up it was the Ra all the way through to Ram Dass. Ray Mears didn’t exist, but the Cubs were full of ex services mentalists. They’d plan a hike, then march you up and down 1000ft morasses in the Peaks.

Youtube’s pre-vid ads are an anthropology PhD waiting to happen. The scams, self filmed in what appear to be luxury penthouse apartments, surreal body language and stresses on key points. Anything that gets a sales hit, the cold calling Kirby hoover salesmen of the 21st century.

I met Teal Swan a few years ago in a non-cult context- she has a mostly online cult now but also a commune in Puerto Rico I think? - and think it's a pretty interesting case. A lot of talk about her telling suicidal members to visualise their death, allegedly encouraging it etc. Massive lack of empathy.

But also a lot of videos like this. Not really encouragement in the traditional sense, but a lot of talk about vibrations and frequencies and life setting you challenges etc etc

I like the impassive gaze

Omer the reasons I like the frequency metaphor, if it is a metaphor, is that's what it actually feels like. Also when you take DMT you hear that hear that escalating high pitch whine, like a literalisation of the metaphor

it's interesting how cult leaders and gurus seem to get this temptation to get all their followers to kill themselves.

I've toyed with the idea of a kill corpsey thread. A few users, version, Matthew, Craner, have suggested it to me. A ritual killing. An annulment. And a sacrificially charged skeleton built into the very fabric of the forum lending it's magical energy to proceedings

Im uneasy with the idea but I acknowledge its power. An ever growing chorus of users urges me to endorse it

Maybe we could do a poll. As it stands I'm in the against camp but a lot of users are telling me this is mere sentimentality and snuffing out a life is our path to glory

If dissensus became a mass-suicide cult it would do a great job of solidifying its rightful place in history. Centuries on people would still be poring through the dematerialization thread and cartoon physics, analyzing every post in 'pointless but it makes me chuckle to myself" listening to all the top 100s of every deceased dissensian to try and understand how it all happened.
