The Meaning of the '90s

I'm currently thinking of it as a somewhat wide-eyed vision of what technology could have led to. You look at something like that Peshay vid and there's this expansiveness to the environments depicted, they're alien and futuristic but there's a serenity to them.

Technology the liberator, like Burroughs' discussion of dreams as preparation for leaving the body and traveling into space. Weightlessness. The seamless melding of man and machine.

that's what came to mind for me too. optimism in the air. the future just around the corner and everything's going to be alright. you hear it in the music - a sense of journey, moving forward, exploration. hints of uncertainty, but the collective conscious hasn't been contaminated yet. hope reigns. good will overcome. earnestness was legal tender.

edit: at least that's how it feels to me, but i grew up in the 90s so it's probably rose tinted.

that was the first thing that came to my mind too. the last gasp of tech Utopia but I feel that’s a nostalgic view of a quite narrow 90s aesthetic

I talk to my other posh friends and the thing we all agree on is how terrified we were

Yeah, I'm wary of this too. I mean darkside came out of the 90s and so did Nick Land...

hard to discern through that kind of fog. but i think we can all agree that there was more positivity being passed around, higher spirits and more fun in general. you can taste it from all the archived media on youtube etc from back then. in particular youth media which was mostly vibrant and playful.
