Curtis Hanson's got at least one other decent film; I really enjoyed Wonder Boys. It's mostly Michael Douglas as a writer and English professor stumbling around campus, stoned, and getting into trouble. The other one that this reminds me of a little, I suppose cos of Russell crowe again, is la confidential. And again, journeyman director on that as well, somehow just knocked it out of the park
He looks a bit like Craner in that one.

I like that Weir didn't chicken out and give it a Hollywood ending. You want them to end up together, but they just can't be and he has to leave. The other one I watched was Witness which is also very good and gave me several erections. 4.5 stars.
Only occurred to me last night that the French captain instantly turns this deception back on him by disguising that (lieutenant's?) corpse as the captain. Not the same trick but very similar. The battle of wits between the two captains is brilliant too; the escalating tricks and surprise attacks. I love how Jack gets the idea for the final attack from the stick insect and that earlier one where they make a rough replica of the stern of the ship with the lanterns on is genius.

Corpsey is backPicnic at Hanging Rock is very, very good – one of those films that use the sweaty horror of the outback to great advantage ('Wake in Fright','Walkabout')
I actually bought Gallipoli on DVD but haven't watched it yet.
