I skipped all the Chinese history stuff, really really boring. The American stuff I also found boring, but all the classical Greek and Italian Renaissance stuff at the beginning is incredible. The Pisan cantos are hardgoing but worth putting in the effort. Needed a rest for a while after reading those.

All about nature they love that. And the Other. Big mountains and big oceans. Crossing big mountains and big oceans! Seeing what's on the other side. Being awestruck and terrified at the same time. They love that.

They love not just physical journeys. But journeys of the spirit, the imagination, the mind. Love to let their eyes wander and their minds wonder. Lots of wandering and wondering in general.

Love to put lenses over their eyes so they can see things that are really small or really far away.

Love to think about vastness. Love pondering really really big things. Literally big or conceptually big. Love thinking about things that happened a long time ago. Love thinking about themselves and their own present from the perspective of an imagined future. Using their own relation to the past as an analogic material for their flights of fancy. Love that.

Love to think of themselves as specs. Specs in a vast cosmos an ocean of stars. Love to look at a spec of dust and imagine that it's a whole world.

Love getting high. Love writing letters to their botanist friends soliciting narcotics from the tropics. Love to sit in their armchairs and suck on their pipes and read stories about adventurer aristocrats and fall asleep midsentence and have weird narcotic dreams and write about them.
