I thought Salvador was solid. James Woods is so good at "playing" sleazy and that character had a lot going on; the back and forth with the military guys over various US-backed coups was a bit preachy and you could tell it was Stone going on an anti-imperialist rant through the character, but still...



I was surprised at how unsentimental it was. I like Platoon, but it's a bit hammy and melodramatic at times, e.g. the sad strings, Dafoe's ridiculous death pose. There was still a bit of that, with John Savage's character in particular, but it felt like a much tougher, colder film. I've paired it with Sorcerer since learning of the two and having finally watched both, the pairing rings true.
