people say dubstep was boring but there was some real pits in that 00s minimal scene, was listening to some tiefschwarz last year and i was begging my head to put on some Loefah I'm sure to @luka 's horror.

nothing ever made it so clear that this is an aesthetic more than a result of limitation and ability. I mean I love the song and the way it sounds but the video doesn't help at all

It's weird because I'm a massive cologne head, the 90s stuff before kompakt is basically some of my favourite music for me @boxedjoy

But when they got into all that The Field over the ice stuff I can't really with them anymore.

But wholly hell all the dr. walker stuff is still on another level, pure alien boogie.

Yeah we are totally on the same path here. I thought the early 10 or so Kompakt releases were refreshing. Techno needed a 'soft', metrosexual reboot after the hideous bro-style techno that was end 90s UK Mills/Surgeon copycats. Then it went almost progressive house. Hard for me to stomach having a massivily mancrush on Wolfgang Voigt from day one.

It's terrible for sure. Some notable exceptions like Lawrence (Dial), and of course every single record by Thomas Brinkmann

this stuff is really hard to mix in a set - it sounds so anaemic when you mix it into something that's more finessed. But "mood board" seems right - I think this stuff is to be enjoyed as texture rather than functional dance music.

Also, making this stuff is very deliberate - it's probably harder to make something sound so lo-fi when you're using Ableton at this point.
I think's it the opposite re: anaemic.

Got some Matthew Herbert stuff playing at the moment. There's a few tracks I'd throw in the mix.

Peak period kompakt, say 2003-2006ish is golden I think. That wistful melancholic vibe but still proper dancefloor bombs. There's very little fucking around with early kompakt is there. Those tracks were made for dancing and they work. Also a lot of techno slammers in there, especially at the Speicher end of things. Reinhard voigt used to tear your face off

There's a cultish element to that early 00s cologne scene that i like as well. Like they all pretty much used to dress the same didn't they? And kompakt had staff lunches where they invented the concept of "minimal pasta" iirc

Kind of the opposite of grotty STL lone wolf hacker lo-fi house though
