One thing I've noticed at megalithic sites is that people very clearly still have a strong urge to leave votive offerings. Take a look into the cavities eroded into the surface of the stone and you'll invariably see that someone has recently placed something there - a button, a 2p, a bird's skull, a smooth pebble, a snail shell, a flower, a nut, a fungus...
My mates and I used to walk out to this crag to pick 'shrooms back in the day. We could never be arsed to walk all the way back though, we'd just call a taxi out to the middle of nowhere and say we were hiking or whatever. We found some horrible looking British porn on VHS in my mate's older brother's room once and decided to take it with us and leave it stood on top of a rock like a little monolith.

Found a jazz mag at a cairn near Mam Tor decades ago. Something like Escort, bad lingerie and blue eye-makeup days

It was celebrated trophy for a few years, traded, discarded, mini-biographies after a day out in the Peaks

A mate is doing (tricky currently) a book of aerial drone shots of megalithic sites, so many published get tied up in jargon, poor photographic printing and site reports from the era of Mortimer Wheeler. Not quite the same as the KLF phoning J Cope to say they’d bulldozed one of his favourite man-made landmarks

Good man, I’ll help with the invoice

@Mr. Tea

Oliver is one of those blokes who’d get his hair shaved in certain drunk company. I can picture him waking up from a night on the tiles with an alien Brian Eno cut from Roxy-era and one eyebrow, going nuts about the assault

I've just been watching another programme by the same guy about the same subject - first episode (of three) is available until Saturday: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b087vh70/britains-ancient-capital-secrets-of-orkney-episode-1

The gist is that recent discoveries of a sizeable Neolithic settlement on the Ness of Brodgar, and the early date and monumental nature of the architecture, suggest that Orkney was a cultural (and perhaps cultic) hub and that it exerted influence on the rest of Britain, even influencing Stonehenge 800 km south. They're so keen on the idea that it comes across virtually as SNP propaganda at a few points. (j/k - sort of.)

Well worth a watch, not least for Chris Packham enthusing over some very cute Orkney voles with significant DNA, and an almost impossibly gorgeous structural engineer (how often do you hear that phrase? - just trust me on this). Gonna watch the second one in a bit.

Prehistory is complex. Due to associations of agriculture with land, the idea of boats and sea routes gets lost in interpretations. If you look at Irish myths, the sea and certain deities are tied to coasts and seas, eg the Fomorians and The Book of Invasions

Britain markets its revised notions of empire as “oh we were just really good at sailing”, but the idea of the earliest, most sacred complex being at the extreme edge of inhabitable land is more about liminality. Physical, psychical and topographical “thin places” - land, water and sky. Turner and van Geppep are good sources on liminal domains and liminal mental/emotional states are touched on in various threads here. Mental subject. Same sense chambered tombs are liminal spaces. Delineated, phenomenological languages in architectural order, domus/agrios

Don't think it's worth a new thread, but we've booked a week in Pembrokeshire, a couple miles from St Davids. Cornwall's going to be too busy this year,
Any recommendations - megaliths, haunted forests, ley lines, organic butchers, pubs, coves, owl sanctuaries, etc?

Whitesands beach! Being a national coastal park there's loads. The whole of St D's bishop complex is a solid day. Nuts architecture if you go in for the gothic (even in summer it can be creepy). Pentre Ifan is an easy drive north and you could nail Cardigan, Gwbert and Mwnt beach (assuming you're not cycling). Farm food outlets everywhere for fresh, organic proteins. Lush seafood - Freshwater West is doable (45 mins) in the same way Cardigan is, plus

Watch your fuel gauge. A487 is tricky for early closing. If you like Black Beef steaks you're in for a riot ;)

No sorry, googled and just bought = ta

Not enough specialists take on such a task, which leaves this gaping hole in their interpretations. How can you address others about stone without working it fully? Therein lies the grindstone

cheers @woops

Cheers, that's a lot to go on. On point advice too, because I need to get a new car between now and then, and I have my eyes on 3.0 litre

How can anyone like Romanesque architecture better than gothic? What a degenerate.
