I've always wondered how much influence Goldie's actually had over the music under his name. Doesn't he essentially just tell producers and engineers how he wants it to sound then they make it for him?
Other thing is his idea of developing drum 'n' bass seems to amount to making the tunes really long and trying to turn it into classical music.

Story goes that Rob Playford is the one who knew his way around the studio and actually made Timeless. Goldie was verbally directing and with his graf background using diagrams to plot out how he visualised the tunes
He was driven. Larger than life. That's what's needed to bring something like jungle to the forefront. Big characters, something for the public to grab on to
Now obviously third or luke would say its because its shit, but one of the things the movers and shakers of brokenbeat put the lack of breakthrough and footholds gained down to is lack of a Goldie type
That The Face cover alone was huge

There's a great vid of Goldie talking about making 'Terminator' where he says Mark Rutherford was so fucked he lost his vision and had to have his mouse hand moved around for him whilst shouting out instructions.

I really like that idea of a techy guy sat at the computer and interpreting the directions of a visionary.
Also cos the people who make brilliantly engineered, sophisticated electronic music tend to be techy nerd types - who *do* make great music sometimes but it's just interesting to have a non-nerd being given a conduit to the electronic arts.

i come back to coltrane/davis a lot and tend to view it as transcendence/immanence. i think a lot about wiley/dizzee too. such different careers. one inwardly directed the other outwardly oriented. needless to say i relate to wiley. do you form these dyads in your head too? got any examples?

But hat quote from his book about Duke Ellington and Captain Beefheart (lol) being great conductors and using other talented people as conduits is pretty on point. Third was saying the same thing about coked up Miles Davis bringing the best outta his cast. Reminds me on the NBA and certain players they call floor raisers, they turn middling teams into contenders and contenders into champions.
