I liked The Jam but hated the Style Council, obviously.
"Going Underground" was an proper ear worm when that came out. There is a deterioration when you get to Town Called Malice though:
I came back to this thread to say I'd been listening to The Jam's first 1977 demo, re-released and cleaned up on a boxset and enjoyed it (I Soulseek'd it for free, natch) and realised I totally missed this comment the first time round. "Saturday's Kids" has piss-poor lyrics - "
Saturday's kids play one arm bandits/ They never win but that's not the point is it?" Well, yeah, it's the entire point of a fruit machine...nobody wanted to just look at lemons and bells while reflecting on how much their life sucks.
As for: "
Saturday's girls work in Tesco and Woolworths / Wear cheap perfume cos its all they can afford /
Go to discos, they drink Babycham, talk to Jan, in bingo accents"...what's a 'bingo accent'? Makes Garry Bushell sound like Malcolm McLaren. Fuck, it makes "Eastenders" sound like Malcom McLaren.
Anyway, The Jam mostly had shit lyrics. I like this though (wank shoes, btw):
