what i am trying to say is that version has made a thread about timelines, based on me telling him that the multiple timeline concept has become very important in popular culture, with marvel films being the prime vector. this is interesting. the idea itself is interesting and its current popularity is interesting. one reason it is has become popular, is, as you say, because we live on 'the darkest timeline' and we would like to escape

so the idea is permeating popular culture, it underpins the marvel movies, its a popular twitter meme, its there in the new age material, its there in the mandela effect and associated paranoias/intimations, its an idea, perception or metaphor that was wormed its way into the very way we experience and understand our lives. in some respects it is 'mere fantasy' and an attempt to swerve the terror of a linear timeline that always ends in death, a runaway train heading to the inevitable cliff-edge. but to say it's just that, is reductive and shuts down a discussion of some of the more interesting aspects of the thing.

im not trying to convince you that infinite timelines exist and that we hop between them constantly. there are experiences which give rise to this model of understanding our lives though. and there are, presumably, reasons why the model has taken hold now and become so prevalent.
i think the history of the idea and the different forms it takes is interesting. i think the experiential bases of the idea are interesting. i think the 'why now' question is interesting. and i think, as Jack says, the link to simulation theory and the collapse of reality into the digital is interesting. none of these things are as pressing as providing for and caring for your own child, admittedly.

Feeding a kid isnt necessarily my point, its more that these concept of the multiverses only really focus around the individual i think, it is an id-led endeavour. It is rare i am convinced by anything
Comic book films aren't my thing really so maybe it is covered but if you think about the lad in the subway with the magic painting here
If his missus is pregnant and she slips into the multiverse switching phenomenon does the child transition into that universe, presumably yes. A baby on the other hand does that stay and she gets parallel universe kid, where does her multiverse switched counterpart go
