I feel like doing a list thread based on my favourite films. I hope people don't mind as there's not going to be that much exotic in there. I used to post on MUBI forum when it was still active and went through a phase of watching high minded art house and 'world' cinema. I've since retreated to the world of Film Noir but there's still a few films I like. Neo Noirs, Mainstream Art House, the odd B Movie. I'll try to list 50 of them in this thread and write a little about each one.


1 - Wild At Heart

I'm a Lynch fanatic and almost the same about Nicolas Cage. Barry Gifford I'd list as one of my favourite authors but I do find him difficult to read. The Lynch film is a lot more watchable, it has ultraviolence and weird sex stuff like the lipstick scene, and moody Chris Isaak music. There might be a few Lynch and Nicolas Cage films in my list so this is a good place to start. Everyone will have already seen it I'd guess.

I like it. Reminds me of Battle Royale, a last man standing type game. Nothing too out there, my younger nieces are into it too. My sister reckons it's a cross between The Hunger Games (I didn't think much of that) and Parasight (which I haven't seen).

I'm looking forward to see what other films are going to feature, but please don't let this distract you from finishing off your top 100 techno list! . there's an audience and we're fidgeting in our seats.

The Lost Boys gets touted as a classic, but Near Dark from the same year is the better of two teenage vampire films. Tangerine Dream score and Kathryn Bigelow's best film.

I like the child vampire, part of the central coterie if I remember. Thought it was a good twist.

Have you seen Byzantium? Another in the canon of interesting vampire films.

No I've not seen it but thanks for the recommendation. It's rare I watch 'new' films to be honest, although I'm watching Doctor Sleep at the moment on someones recommendation, a recent sequel to The Shining. I thought it would be rubbish but half way through as it's 3 hours long and it's not bad at all.

2 - La Luna

I've seen my share of Italian art house films, not that many by Bertolucci, but when he died, a lot of the talk was about his other films and the controversial rape scene in Last Tango in Paris. I'd say this film is even more controversial and a truly bizarre plot about a heroin addict son whose mother gets him clean by starting a sexual relationship with him. As such this film seems rarely mentioned but I'd say its the most upfront blatant depiction of the Oedipus Complex on screen.

4 - Basic Instinct

From Paul Verhoeven, director of Total Recall and RoboCop. Those films are alright, full of quirkiness, but don't stand up as well to me as Basic Instinct. An almost hyperreal thriller where every scene is over the top. That and Sharon Stone is really quite an attractive actress, gives a fine performance here.

Never seen "near dark" or "la luna", and it's been years since I saw basic instinct. That's one of those where the film itself is irrelevant, all I remember from that time was the media circus/outrage about it.

La Luna sounds fantastic. Craner said that Sharon Stone is 'minging.' A minority opinion that.

Glad there's some already that people haven't seen. My reviews are not much better when I've recently seen a film, these are dug out from my memory as I think of them so I can be quite brief explaining my choices unfortunately. Maybe I'll write a little more about some films but I don't want to force it.

5 - The Hitcher

Apparently Ebert called the film reprehensible because of the violence. I liked Ebert as a critic but I also rate this road thriller. Rutger Hauer plays a good bad guy. It seems a cross between Duel and the equally awesome Ida Lupino directed film, The Hitch-Hiker.

6 - Over The Edge

One thing that I find can make a film annoying is bad child actors. This has a young cast and when I started watching it I expected it to have a moralistic message, a bad kid comes good kind of thing, but it just descends into pure anarchy where even the adults are as inept.
