I think of stupid as a difficulty in understanding, as in stupefying someone, rendering them incapable of certain action.

So both words semantically have to do with some kind of impediment or difficulty, but I think @linebaugh is right about stupidity being a sort of false/hollow understanding, as displayed by the mount stupid plot.

To me, it's far more offensive to say intelligence isn't real, because then you're stuck with "well they're just lazy" or something when called upon to explain why these people can't hang with post-industrial society.
