I was just pulling out some records for the boss and she asked me to grab that song Where Are You by, er, 16 Bit and so I started playing it on top of that German version of Los Ninos del Parque cos that was on the other turntable. And I was immediately struck by the (unplanned) juxtaposition of some tedious preacher banging on about how we are all hell bound for the tiniest and most mundane of acts which apparently count as sins... while he was constantly being interrupted by the joyous shouts from the other turntable of some girl celebrating the teenage joys of hanging around in the park smoking cigarettes, letting off bombs (I guess she's on about firecrackers or something, to me the appeal is about the tiny naughty things they are doing, I assume it's not terrorism and killing people) and finger banging etc
I'm hardly the first to do that, in fact the other day I was amusing myself playing DJ Assault's filth over some religious song, but I was wondering if people ever think about that, if they have suggestions for ones that work well cos the lyrics either fit together or argue or whatever. Is anyone actually good at this kind of thing and can make a story? Or is that just too cheesy? I hate it when they have those turntable contests and they mouth the words to pretend they are saying them.
Do people even care about lyrics at all these days? Or mixing in fact come to think of it?
