I like films but I also can't understand the obsession with Kane. Gone With The Wind, to name one example, is a far more moving film. Kane is so stilted and melodramatic

i dont want to recover old ground but i will anyway, anytime someone says something like oh wonderful cinematography i always assume they are bluffing

im not like craner though, im not a reverse snobbery man. i do like pretentious films, basic pretentious stuff like bergman. craner hates all that on principle. it has to be tits and explosions for him. and car chases.

There's a lot of stuff that inspires no particular reaction out there. I'm thinking of all the times I've played music I absolutely love to friends and they're just sort of shrugged their shoulders (and visa versa). They don't hate it, they don't even dislike it, but they would never bother listening to it again.

It's not all about Kane though, there's the decadent luxury of the Dietrich/Sternberg movies, but you're right, those pleasures are reserved for aesthetes like what I am.

I've never seen it but I have the entire original series on blu-ray. My fiance brought it for me for my birthday last year, it cost her £70

im not totally indifferent to them and there are films which have made an impression on me but a lot of things i see people raving about, specially old black and white films, i cant even truly beleive people are telling the truth. i always assume they are just pretending to like it
see i would be on your side but i saw The Lady from Shanghai on the big screen some years back and in that moment thats when i got it

I watched a load of Orson Welles films last year and thought they were all really good. Citizen kane is OK but nowhere near as good as some of the later ones. Falstaff is particularly good but othello and the kafka ones are also good. And that restored one is decent as well.

Mr Arkadin is like a more fun rerun of citizen kane, much less depressing.
