Well, I dunno, I'd have to give it a second reading. After the first few chapters I sort of got the idea that nothing of what was happening was 'real' and could conceivably all be projections on the part of the narrator. Both characters seem to appear and disappear without any explication, like in a dream. But whether they're real or not definitely doesn't negate any of what you were saying about them which seems pretty spot on to me.
