found footage from the Backrooms

…and there it is. classic example of “analyzing” something by applying an intellectual framework that only lets you see one thing, no matter what the sensory input is.

It's an awful book. Horrible, repetitive, cut-and-paste job of bits of Han, Fisher, Baudrillard, Derrida, Land, Bifo, etc. That couple of lines about Columbus and the Backrooms were all that stood out, at least in terms of positives. The guy says absolutely nothing you haven't heard before, perhaps even less. Reads like a student trying to be k-punk.

the stuff about the backrooms representing the inescapability of late capitalism or whatever reminds me of the part in house of leaves where footage of the house is shown to a bunch of famous academics and they all trot out their obligatory bits (bloom saying the house represents the anxiety of influence, paglia saying it represents "vagina envy" etc.)

You should review books for a living, seriously. This was a mini masterpiece in concise evisceration.
