There is a lot to like about smoking; apart from the hit of nicotine etc there is the obvious cool factor and, perhaps most of all, the satisfaction of completing multiple little rituals throughout the day - when I rise It's lovely to have one on the balcony with my breakfast coffee (if it's still light), and I just this sec savoured an after dinner one. When you go out to eat, the cigarette breaks pleasantly punctuate the meal. Walking to the station I enjoy a nice cigarette, knocking back pints of wine in the Chatterbox while watching the footie it's the occasional pauses to step outside and smoke that save me from getting too paralytic to walk home. Stepping outside a bar with mates and - with shameless hypocrisy given what I said above - blagging fags from the locals while eating cake in the cafe below.

I was going to say the same thing as Rich. flags are great on a million levels and there's something sad about that bit of western culture dying out. I'd say it's almost totally dead in NYC, the only people i know who smoke here of the top of my head are Syrian, Arab, Swiss, Kenyan.

It's just such a shame that it happens to be so bad for you.

Funny you should mention Swiss smokers. I lived in Geneva for a year some time ago, and even though this was before the blanket ban on smoking in restaurants, bars and clubs in the UK, the difference was striking. People there smoked basically everywhere, and restaurants and pubs didn't even have no-smoking sections. Maybe it's changed since then, I dunno.

I was never addicted to smoking despite years of drunken dabbling (sidebar: I might have been addicted to them but covered it up by smoking weed instead of fags) but a few months ago I tried out one of those ELF bars and now I chain smoke them. D'oh.

JPS old favourite for lung ripping, Kensitas a staple too with a waiter serving up a platter as the design, a gimmick for aeons shifting to shit blue. Cigarettes still had an allure in the 70’s/80’s. Solid period of design too - bold gold or silver or dark font lettering, semi-exotic colouring, sharp borders, aspirational but more likely seen in hazy, shadowed snooker clubs or pubs which were never ever aired

British brands were generally terrible insomuch as you had ltd options compared to today. Outside of jps and Kennies you only really had embassy, regal and bennies. Silk Cut for dilettantes, Marlboro for stomach churning (wtf is their mix/flavour doing?), with roll ups a cheaper but less practical option, ie paralytic/tripping

The first fag of the day was my favourite of all cigarettes. Awake early or late, pausing to take in the day, what your responsibilities were or weren’t, savouring a few minutes to yourself with a drink - liminal, like life

Ooh, forgot to say, there is also something nice about putting a cigarette behind the ear so you're ready to smoke without having to go to all the trouble of getting the pack out, opening it etc

I kidded myself for years that I "don't smoke", but once after a session of Mortal Kombat when my host kept pressing pipes of pure black on me and I felt "something's missing", and then I realised the years of smoking spliffs had given me a nicotine habit, and then I had to admit "i love tobacco"

Brains are different I suppose, never gotten anything out of cigs other than bad breath and a headache. No other physical or cognitive effects I can discern. Probably have smoked 5-7 packs over my lifetime. Used to bring back packs from Mexico, where they cost about $2USD. Use them so rarely most of them are still in a drawer.

Sometimes you have to make sacrifices to look cool. If you persevere, really put your mind to it, you can acquire the expensive and unhealthy habit.

Ive never once felt a craving for a cig despite going through periods where I was at the very least daily, probably maxing out around 5-6 a day for periods of around a week or two. Waxing and waning like this for years. Not sure they do anything for me psychoactively but maybe its just unnoticed because I do certainly like them, but mainly for the procedural aspect.
