To What Extent Was 'Zomby - Where Were U In '92?' A Real Jungle Album?

I think I’d totally have to concede that if I’m being consistent! Unfortunately, the people today who make appeals to Adorno in their cultural critique miss this point altogether, precisely because their conservative sensibility’s fealty to Art fears nothing more than ‘zoomers on tik tok’

yes, indeed. Communism stands above civilisation. the ruling class will never not pledge allegiance to the arts and traditions of this civilisation.

Another good idea from your letter, which I have had many times, is the chronicle of Italian and why not international opportunism. The "yesterday" sector of the Threads of Time, which some comrades wanted abolished, responds somewhat to this. Well, among the many little facts, I could talk about a controversy at the Socialist Youth Congress in Bologna in 1912 between the "culturists" who wanted, with Tasca, to reduce the youth movement to a little school, and the "anti-culturalists" who through me claimed full function for it politics and in the front row fighting against the reformist right of the time. I have always been anti-scholastic and anti-culturalist, and ever since then I have always been defined as a maniac of doctrinal rigidity and theoretical premises . Contradiction in me? No, the dialectical complexity of the problem, and the impossibility of reducing it to pills.
Therefore workers do not have to take courses in philosophy or anything else, but they only have to fight for their class. I remember that then, as usual touching on subtleties in the use of exact terms, it was said that I contrasted Tasca's culture with socialist "faith" and "feeling". In a certain sense it is like this: but it would be another serious mistake to see this as a shift away from healthy materialism. What I willingly deride is the "conscience" asked of every single class fighter: see Rome meeting and related schemes of Marxist praxis. First act as revolutionaries then understand and discuss: therefore instead of the individual (soldier or marshal) we have the class party.

the controversies of pro and anti-dogmatism engage in a terminological confusion, which is unfortunately reinforced by the university. dogmas (materially and historically speaking) are practical guides for action with their accompanying distortions in class societies. if one were to suppose they just come down from on high, one can see where the confusion arises.

let us take religions and religious art as an example: they satisfy the needs of social classes to control society, not immediately to understand the world as such - that ideological garnish comes later in their conformist phase (if we stick to the schema of ideologies which go through an anti-formist/reformist/conformist phase.) even in this sense, philosophy can only be a form of religious knowledge in its most abstract form, and this is where its real value and potency lies.

Certainly, Marxism is not a dogma in this sense of truth revealed from on high or even more disgracefully the worship of a Marx or Lenin, but if the idea is that anticlerical scepticism and atheism will give us the ultimate keys to discerning absolute objective truth, then, yes, certainly, the working class will and has asserted its combative truth (marxism) dogmatically and barbarically. One cannot fight a war without assuming the mantle of declaratory judgment.

to answer the question, it's not a jungle album, it's an impression of a rave by someone who was sucking on a lollipop in 92

he's not popular in manchester despite his tweets to the Whalley Range 'mandem" to get 'the tings" during his 'beef' with Oldham street legendary DJ Damu

I rate his first album on 4AD ( "dedication' , greater than the sum of its parts, even if he did steal them )

and I will confess that I did have the opening 30 seconds off his first track from 'with love' as my ring tone on the only expensive phone I ever owned ( pitch bended dub sirens and breaks would get my attention when someone called, sort of embarrassing on the bus though when it would blast out )

Zomby - As Darkness Falls

should I be scared to call the guy a dick?

fuck no

I want my money back on that 'grime' album he did: tonal rubbish pressed to clear vinyl

to be honest I wasn't at that Doncaster rave, the one time I've been to Donny was the Two Trees free festival failure couple of years before where our convoy from Manchester passed by and waved at Max and the Brew Crew who were on the opposite side of the road as they were headed for another failed free festival in Rochdale which was sort of scuppered by them trying to pull on site chased by 15 police cars with sirens blazing

we actually parked up in some field in Donny but only Manchester people arrived so it was a case of giving the local off licence money and corrupting the local youth with squidgy black, I remember I threw up in some bushes, last time I ever drank cider

imagine if he had necked a few doves

he'd have been insufferable, and I'm not a violent man

edit: nothing "wrong" with Blue Velvet though? - although maybe I should ask myself some hard questions

edit: the bird in Blue Velvet was a bit rubbish looking, it is obviously fake, is that the problem with the tee shirt of the film?

Same age as me.

The one I recalled liking was the Rustie remix, spliff dub, recalling Billy boyo

The Rustie additions, that sort of overlapping hoover sound, are what make it.

I remember hearing this out a bit in London, at video visions in Dalston, at a night where prancehall was djing and the bug was in the audience. Wifey?

I think zomby, and also Rustie, are a part of what I'd call the superstructure.

As in, there is nothing inherently wrong with being 12 and sucking on a lollipop in 1992.

The yearning is also a feeling

But its the very end of what can be usefully built on top of the Jamaican hardcore buum whatever.

So it dips into parody very quick and becomes novelty / farce.

Like, with the above, the Billy boyo version obviously is a lot more enduring.

rusties hoover already sounds old.

one of my fake daughters was six months old and sucking on a nipple in 92, but she's not a dick about it though

just saying

you can't help when you are born, but you can still "come correct", a lesson Zomby never learnt
